An electric flower is not only for fans of the RTS games in the 1990s.

The Danish studio of the video game Slipgate IronWorks took on a difficult task to return to the center of attention of the “epic” game RTS in accordance with the classic Ninetie reduction, including very affordable, but deep (“easy to learn, difficult to master”) difficulties, impressive expeditions with each missionary campaign and significant musical accompaniment. The possibility of Mupltiplayer against online players or artificial intelligence. In a sense, they managed to complete the task, perhaps too well (at the limit of copies), in others this will depend on your taste.

Electric flower

History unfolds in the alternative history of 1997. The Cuban missile crisis has turned into a third world war, and thanks to the use of nuclear weapons, the world is marked by the wild growth of “electric colors” called Tempest in radioactivity infected with zones. This flower can not only suck radioactivity from the soil, but also turn it into a liquid that overcomes all traditional transmissions or fuel with its energy potential. The ruins of the war were the Alliance of the USA, Canada and Western Europe, nicknamed the Global Defense Forces (GDF), as well as the Alliance of Eastern Europe with Asia, nicknamed the Temid Dyn (DYN). These two factions are currently fighting with a tough struggle for the new world and its most valuable raw materials.

In general, the plot is not enough originality, but it is really honestly represented in the style of classic RTS: before each mission you have the possibility of an interactive conversation with its client, and you will also see short animation films that usually show (without dialogs) the battlefield, setting up the atmosphere for the next mission. The commanders, their consultants or even scientists in these stories cannot be denied personality or charisma, so along with rather frequent turns during the missions themselves the game is built a rather interesting new world, including its history and politics. In addition to human enemies, the third, inhuman side of the conflict will also come to the later stages of the campaign.

It is a pity that the campaign or the multiplayer composition does not yet allow this third party to try, because its design is interesting and significantly different. I assume that it is likely that if the game is successful, we will see a campaign for this party in some of this future expansion or DLC. As I have already indicated, and not about the general story of the game, I was intrigued by turns in some missions of the campaign. Both GDF and DYN are offered every 11 unique plot missions that will take you from several tens of minutes to an hour of play, in accordance with difficulties, and whether you want to perform side tasks during the mission, most of the time is an attractive reward. Interesting turns are mainly related to the fact that initially the usual mission turns into something completely different, therefore, for example, the mission of the escort is turning into protection of the base or vice versa. I do not want to directly reveal their content, but I will mention at least one entertaining case when you should go in accordance with the mission to compete with your competitors from the same army in the extraction of raw materials, but soon it will show that your competitors really need them to save their lives from enemies.

Stone, scissors, paper

As in the Command & Conquer series (the inspiration of which, perhaps here is too literally), the core of the gameplay is a relatively simple system of stone, scissors, paper. Thus, individual units have weaknesses to each other, for example, therefore, you must carefully combine soldiers or vehicles against infantry and the Air Force, etc. However, the development tree is not very complicated, and if you establish lower difficulties, you can cope with the enemy (in the campaign and outside). My favorite tactic “Make a giant air fleet so that you do not have to deal with the terrain” in this case worked as well as thirty years ago. Nevertheless, you will not do this easy for a higher complexity, and you will have to manage not only the creation of a more diverse army, but also the key combinations for the exact control of each of its components in the battles. To offer not only a copy of classical games, they added several unique ideas for using resources (for example, GDF generates “Intel” raw materials for special attacks, and DYN can switch buildings to a more powerful but destructive mode) and secondary unlocking “RPG” improved wood. etc.).

One of the best aspects of the game is the fact that the classic gameplay and the atmosphere were transformed into a technical format worthy of 2025. The game graphics are a detailed and impressive animation of bases or explosion. Unfortunately, I found that the color palette of too “arcade” is oversaturated (in addition, the red color of one of the parties to the conflict and the main raw material on the map repeatedly confused me), and this slight impression was almost northern wild rock music. I would like the creators to be softened in these relations, but I think that this will largely be a question of the taste of each player. During the review, I also faced several minor technical errors, but with the exception of one staining mission (which decided to restart it), it was nothing serious. Of course, the creators promise a correctly rich patch for the 1st day.

Verdict

Fans of classic RTS 1990s will be at home. It is quite possible for beginners that the experience will be even better, since they will not be compared. An honest expedition deepens the history of the game, but the atmosphere can destroy some players relative to the wild color palette and music. The story campaign contains interesting turns, the potential of a multiplayer game will be shown only in the coming months.
