On Thursday, Bungie dropped the Season 17 sandbox patch preview bomb for Destiny 2, shifting the wholesome live-action gun themes from fanaticism to exoticism and glamor without an overhaul.
The nearly 9,000-word dev blog also included major changes to Destiny 2’s weapon arsenal, where Auto Rifles, SMGs, and Machine Guns discovered promising changes for each of Destiny 2’s weapon classes. here on May 24.

In Season 17, the Sandbox Team changes every aspect of the sandbox to improve the player experience in PvP. Here are the weapon team goals to support this.

Along with Auto Rifles and Pulse Rifles, Bungie Staff Designer Chris Proctor felt the team wasn’t as competitive in the mid-range as they’d like.
As a result, the following changes have been made so that Auto Rifles and Scopes can better compete with mid-range pistols and outperform standard-sized Auto Rifles:
automatic rifle
impact shotgun
For submachine guns, Proctor wrote that “zoom is a very important factor” for the weapon class, noting that low zoom SMGs don’t feel particularly competitive in PvP.
Thus, the scaling gap between these weapons has been reduced and the damage range increased to make SMGs more competitive in PvP:

adaptive automatic weapon
Finally, Proctor shared that Machine Guns and PvE aren’t where Bungie wanted them to be yet.
