Impressions from playing Indica | Zing

Who is Indica? What is Indica? How and for what will Indica be played? For God’s sake will be? We asked ourselves these and many other questions when we watched the announcement trailer (or one of the other trailers) for Odd Meter, a game published by the famous Polish team 11 Bit Studios. As part of Steam Next Fest, you can try out a demo version that doesn’t answer all the questions, but gives a pretty concrete idea of the game.

We learn the least about the story from the demo. On the one hand, because of the demo’s length, the developers say about half an hour, I spent less than an hour on it, and on the other hand, because we are thrown into the action without knowing the previous events. In the game part, in addition to Indika, there is another character with whom the titled nun conducts dialogues, and an inner voice that accompanies and seduces the main character. You can notice some fragments of the story, but there is nothing to judge.

But as for the dialogues, not only their level, but also the overall presentation of the game, from my point of view, is the most attractive thing so far. The graphics are at a very high level by the standards of a small studio, and when something is missing, it is compensated by style and atmosphere. This is also helped by the music, which is what we could hear in the trailer. Sympathetically strange.

Puzzles and exploration

But while Indika remains somewhat of a mystery in terms of narrative and motivations — the Russian developers have emigrated from the country and are looking to criticize the Russian Orthodox Church with a current-events twist — the gameplay revealed quite a bit in the demo. The game can easily be defined as a third-person adventure game based on puzzle solving and exploration.

Finding items, texts or altars gives experience points in addition to the acquired knowledge. The indicator will increase, in the demo we will pick it up at level 9. The question is, what will be the point of this pumping, because at several intermediate levels I chose perks only for the additional experience. Perhaps with the new level some RPG element will appear…

The puzzles are ecological and fairly standard. I didn’t find them too difficult, but I didn’t find them stupid either. In the demo, we are faced with moving a ladder or boxes. I was also given the opportunity to give orders to my companion. The environment intuitively tells you several times where to go and how to move so that the journey forward is successful. In one passage, we see an impressive and effective transformation of the environment, which we can directly control and which is again part of the ecological puzzle.

The impressions from the demo are almost exclusively positive. I am looking forward to Indica more than before playing the selected sample.

He eventually escapes from danger, too, and here I will allow myself a small criticism. Firstly, choosing an escape route requires trial and error, and secondly, the controls are not flexible enough to make the whole sequence enjoyable.

However, the impressions from the demo are almost entirely positive. Indica still entices with its theme, presentation, plot and atmosphere, and again gives a fairly good idea of the gameplay. It still holds some mysteries, and the full game will probably reveal much more, but now I can confidently say that I am looking forward to it more than before playing the selected demo. In addition, the title should be available soon, it is planned for the second quarter of this year.
