Tencent is modifying one of its apps to prevent Chinese gamers from playing games outside the country, Reuters reported on Thursday.
Officially, the Chinese government is required to approve all games released and running in China, but players have long had options to circumvent these rules. Tencent has introduced such a method which offers network acceleration tools allowing players to play on foreign servers.
Now, Tencent plans to upgrade one of those devices to only support games officially running in China from May 31. The company hasn’t revealed the reason for the change, but it comes after new moves by the Chinese government to control the release of games in China and the number of people playing the games in the country, preventing minors from playing legally. . Only three hours a week and the introduction of spending limits.
The Chinese government has spent the past nine months refusing to release new games in the country, but earlier this week broke the drought and allowed 45 games. Many of them were developed in China. Meanwhile, more than 14,000 development studios in China have been shut down. It was also the second nine-month approval freeze since the second approval in 2018.
