We know that there are several characters in the Sonic gaming franchise. More than some would like, and not everyone receives the same attention and affection from fans, especially those who grew up in the character’s modern era. Overall, players much prefer those introduced in the Classic Era, with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles being the favorites.
And it’s no news that Sega (official site) has already realized this and is reducing the number of appearances in the most recent games, such as Sonic Frontiers.
And in games that return to the classic 2D style, such as Sonic Mania, the company tries to rescue some characters that were almost forgotten by the public, such as Mighty and Ray, who came through DLC, and in Sonic Super Star Fang the Hunter (known as Nack the Weasel – despite that he is not a weasel – or Fang Sniper).

Who is Trip? Sonic Superstar Character
This character, who appeared in the Trouble Trio trailer alongside Robotnik and Fang behind the Chaos Emeralds, is covered in metal armor and her face is covered, leaving doubt as to her true identity.
If we look at the character’s tail, we can assume that this new character will actually be Marin the Raccoon, a character in disguise who appeared in Sonic Rush Adventure.
Or even Styx, a character who appeared in the Sonic Boom series, also disguised in armor to try to ruin Robotnik’s plans from the inside. However, there is a problem with this theory.
Both Marine and Stick are characters from other dimensions. Of course, interdimensional travel was nothing new to the franchise, as Sonic only knew about it while in other alternate dimensions. Blaze and Silver also traveled across dimensions in the 2006 game Sonic The Hedgehog, so the characters will have the opportunity to make this “dimensional jump” in the new game. However, there is another problem.
Iizuka has already made it clear that characters from the modern era will not appear in the Classic Sonic games. In other words, there is no Shadow in the 2D mascot games. Thus, Styx and Marin, who are characters from the spin-off and the modern era, are excluded from the new universe created in Sonic Super Star. So the question remains: who is Trip?
Trip is actually just Trip!
The character Trip is Oshima’s first creation for the Sonic franchise in decades. Oshima is best known as the creator of the original designs for Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Robotnik in 1990. However, he left Sega and Sonic Team after working on Sonic Adventure in 1999.
Oshima worked closely with Takashi Iizuka to come up with ideas for the new character. “We sent images back and forth and had a constant dialogue about what the personality should look like,” says Oshima. “I kept coming up with ideas for the character’s actions and themes as an armored lizard. I worked on the design while discussing ideas with Iizuka-san.”
“When you look at her, it’s obvious that she’s covered in armor, and the reason she’s covered in armor in the game is because her character is the sun-eyed lizard in English,” Iizuka says. “In Japanese it’s more straightforward – in Japanese it’s literally ‘armored lizard’. But the sun is the animal that is referenced in the creation of Trip.

The armored lizard, or spiny lizard, or sunfish, is a species of lizard belonging to the family Uromastycidae. These reptiles live in desert and semi-arid regions of Africa and the Middle East. They are characterized by spiny scales that cover their body, providing protection from predators and adverse environmental conditions.
They feed primarily on vegetation and have adaptations for conserving water, an important ability in their arid habitat. Its color varies, including shades of brown, gray and green, which aids in camouflage. The spiny lizard is an example of evolutionary adaptation to life in arid environments and is highly prized by captive reptile enthusiasts.
So in Trip’s case, she (or he) is not armored or disguised. It’s just him! Trip is just Trip. Or Trip the Sungazer as it’s officially known. He’s a new character in the game and, from what we saw in the trailer, an ally of Fang and Robotnik, but he doesn’t seem to be as bad as the other two. But we will only know for sure when the game hits stores on October 17, 2023.
