Shuji Utsumi Says Sega’s SuperGame Could Include NFTs and Cloud Technology

In a recent interview, Sega released more information about their next project, the “Supergame” type, which actually refers to several different games with several different elements, and apparently some of them may include cloud technology or NFTs. In May 2021, the company revealed during an earnings call that its long-term plan includes a five-year strategy called “Creating a Super Game.”

Its parent company, Sega Sammy, said in November that it would consider investing up to 100 billion yen ($882 million) over the next five years to achieve its “SuperGame” ambitions. At the time, “Supergame” was considered a massive one-shot game, but a new internal interview revealed that this refers to the description Sega gives to several of the big-budget games it has planned.

In an interview with recruiting website Sega Japan (translated by VGC), Shuji Utsumi, executive vice president of the company, explains, “Sega offers a wide range of game content, including hardware and arcade content, made possible by a variety of technologies. . We define “SuperGame” as the development of AAA games that span the widest range of SEGA technologies, and we aim to achieve this in our five-year plan.”

Explaining further, Utsumi said, “Different games are being developed within SuperGame, and although each game will be different, there is no doubt that these will be interactive games that go beyond traditional games.

For example, people who played games used to be called gamers, but now watching games has become a culture in itself, and these people can no longer be called gamers. I think there is a lot of potential in the relationship between people who play and people who watch games. We’re thinking about creating a new way of having fun within these possibilities.”

Also, according to Utsumi, the title “SuperGame” must meet four main criteria: “(i) cross-platform, (ii) global multilingual development, (iii) simultaneous worldwide release, and (iv) AAA title.” In other words, you can imagine that the scale of game development will be the same as that of a global blockbuster.”

Sega CEO Katsuya Hisai added, “There are several projects in development for SuperGame. My department already has about 50 people involved in the early stages. We expect the final number of employees to be several hundred.”

Sega’s SuperGame is “a natural extension of the gaming future”

Sega recently trademarked the Sega NFT and has now proposed including NFT in its SuperGame project, as well as incorporating cloud technology (which may be due to Sega’s partnership with Microsoft to use Azure technology), two technologies that Sega has recently taken an interest in.

Sega producer Masayoshi Kikuchi explained in the same interview, “Games have a history of expanding by connecting different cultures and technologies. For example, recent examples are social media and watching gaming videos.

This is a natural extension of the gaming future, which will cover new areas such as cloud gaming and NFTs. We’re also designing SuperGame in terms of how different games can be connected to each other.”
