We’re patiently waiting to learn more about the Asus ROG Ally, but the first leaks give a peek into its innards. Preliminary spec listings for the gaming laptop suggest it will feature an AMD Ryzen “Z1 Extreme” APU and could be powered by Valve’s Steam Deck Van Gogh chip.

The portable PC gaming battlefield isn’t particularly busy, and the Steam Deck remains arguably the portable champion. While the idea of Asus ROG Ally fighting a battle royale at the platform’s gates excites us, the Onexplayer and Aya Neo alternatives already exist. So what can a newbie boast that others can’t? Well, the leaks suggest that he will be equipped with a bespoke APU, just like Valve’s plucky rival.

The latest Asus ROG Benchleaks leak reveals potential Geekbench specs for a wearable, including the aforementioned Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU. The chip has eight cores and 16 threads and is naturally more powerful than the Steam Deck chip. It’s not surprising, but it means it can even give Steam Deck 2 a run for its money.

Previous leaks reported by Videocardz hint that we will potentially have two versions of the Asus ROG Ally, but the differences between the obvious RC71L and RC71X variants are unclear. Additional specs indicate that at least one of the models has a 512GB PCIe Gen 4 SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, in addition to the aforementioned Z1 Extreme chip.

In terms of pricing, we don’t have much information right now, but a YouTube video from laptop expert Cary Golomb (The Phawx) suggests that Asus will match Valve’s $649 MSRP. Naturally, this would help secure the company’s status as a true Steam Deck competitor, especially if it can push the frame rate beyond the Deck’s capabilities.

Of course, you have to take all the ROG Ally leaks with a grain of salt, as we’re still waiting for Asus to share any official details. We already know that the Pocket PC is going to be something special, but only time will tell if it will become a disruptive force in the Windows laptop space.
