It looks like Half-life 2 Remastered could be something special as soon as the modder uses the Nvidia RTX Remix to add a bit of a follow-up to Valve’s classic FPS game. Yes, we fully understand why you’d rather play Half-Life 3, but the sheen pushes the actual age of the 90s shooter back several years, and your modern graphics card will be a real challenge.
The idea of remastering games isn’t new, but Nvidia’s RTX Remix makes updating classics like Half-life 2 less of a pain. Additionally, the GPU maker recently announced that its GeForce toolkit is now open source, meaning many DirectX 8 and 9 games could benefit from the same rendering. While Portal RTX is already pushing for AI-enhanced visuals, the next title in development could sell the concept entirely to fans of classic PC games.
Created by modder Igor ZdrovichHL2RTX actually uses the Portal RTX code to implement route tracking in Valve’s other competitor in the FPS genre. Criticizing the visuals of the original seems a bit cruel, but the side-by-side comparison shots show what tracking lighting can do for a 1998 game. I’d go so far as to say details like the mirrored floor make Half Life 2 It feels like a much newer game, but it’s still the sci-fi sequel we all know and love under the hood.

We spoke to CD Projekt Red last month about Cyberpunk 2077’s path tracking, and the developer thinks it could be the new standard for PC gaming. Unlike ray tracing, this method creates rays on a light source to illustrate more precise lighting in games and animated movies.
Capture? Well, it will make your GPU work harder than any other rendering option, but using it in older games like Half-Life 2 improves performance by making it easier to access basics. We always recommend checking out the best graphics cards if you plan on gaming with routing, and it’s worth remembering that the RTX Remix is specifically compatible with GeForce graphics cards.
