A Cyberpunk 2077 roadmap update is right around the corner, and CD Projekt Red Global Art Director and Vice President of Art Jakub “Kuba” Knapik told PCGamesN that the game’s “cinematic rendering” of role should completely change to Night City. To celebrate, CDPR released a 15-minute video that walks you through how routing works and shows you how the images will change.
PCGamesN already spoke to videographer Jakub “Kuba” Knapik at GDC 2023 about Cyberpunk 2077’s path tracking, so if you’d like more information on the feature, you can find it here.
You can see Path Tracing in action along with detailed descriptions from various CD Projekt Red staff members in the video below. According to Giovanni De Francesco, Senior Technical Lighting Artist, you should be able to see the difference in routing “everywhere” in Cyberpunk 2077.
To break it down to the absolute basics, route tracing is the better version of ray tracing. Of course, you’ll still need one of the best graphics cards around, but you should get “movie-like rendering,” as Knapik said in his chat with PCGamesN. Using a combination of ray tracing and DLSS 3 (and other similar AI technologies), path tracing can achieve high frames per second, further improving lighting and visuals.
Cyberpunk 2077 is already well built on the CDPR RED engine, though the developer will be moving to Unreal Engine 5 in future versions, so lighting changes could improve Night City visuals. Reflections, shadows, global illumination, and ambient occlusion will be greatly improved with the AI hybrid path following feature.
You can expect Cyberpunk 2077’s trajectory tracker to launch on April 11 with patch 1.62.which is incredibly soon.
If you want to further enhance your experience while waiting for Phantom Liberty, these Cyberpunk 2077 mods will definitely do the trick. We’ve also got a breakdown of all of the Cyberpunk 2077 endings and the best cyberpunk games if you’re diving into 2077 and want to explore everything the genre has to offer.
