Tempest Rising recreates the feel of classic C&C in a full multiplayer match

If you’re desperate for a new Command and Conquer, or if you’re just a fan of RTS games in general, Tempest Rising should be on your priority list. Created by developer Slipgate Ironworks, the project is the brainchild of several developers with a long history with C&C and the genre in general. In the new update, the team shows what a Tempest Rising multiplayer match looks like right now in a great 1v1 duel video.

3D Realms CEO Frederick Schreiber will take on lead designer Brandon Casteel in an exhibition match designed to give a better idea of how Tempest Rising’s multiplayer plays out. Schreiber leads the Global Defense Force, while Casteel leads the Storm Dynasty. Schreiber quickly realizes that Casteel is a much more capable player, but sponsors him to show how things work.

From the start, the influence is clear, but the polish is modern – I can imagine a parallel world where it’s the next game in a long C&C series that’s been missing for years. But while the team at Slipgate Ironworks aren’t shy about making such comparisons, and there are Warcraft 3 and StarCraft 2 trailers here as well, Tempest Rising is definitely looking to bring its own style and ideas.

At the gate, Casteel notes that there is currently an option to start with a small team that can be used for early scouting as you begin to build your base, though he says that the team is wary of potential tipping strategies and is ready to change the way it works. if necessary. He is also considering resource boxes, which can currently be found hidden in various nooks and crannies around the map for a quick boost should your units catch them.

However, most of your resource gathering will be with vintage-style harvesters. Harvesting the Tempest resource leaves vines on the ground, which (like the tiberium flower in C&C earlier) have the potential to regrow Tempest over time if they are close enough to the live pod. If allowed to grow longer, Tempest will mature, making her more valuable at harvest, an interesting twist in the way she approaches resource conservation.

Casteel lets the gameplay, which you can check out below, speak for itself, but occasionally chimes in to point out a random moment, such as when Schreiber’s initial scouting infantry force is conveniently held up by his first tank fire. In response, the GDF builds a fleet of Hunter Tanks, a high-tech long-range combat unit. They are supported by the Drone Mauler, a heavy infantry unit with two drones that can hide when stationary.

Unfortunately for Schreiber, he accidentally overpowers just as the Storm Dynasty forces close in on his base, leaving its defenses open to attack as he rushes to build more power plants. However, he parries the attack and retaliates, but must counter Dynasty’s Sensor Array, a tall and powerful defensive structure that detects stealth and stacks a Tempest Charge on nearby vehicles when he attacks.

Throughout the match, I was impressed with the style. The artwork is excellent, the soundtrack moves merrily, and the sound effects when multiple units attack pack quite a punch while still being quite distinctive, which should help you quickly differentiate between units to recognize what you’re looking for. hear. Perhaps my favorite part, though, is the barking of the units. They have always been the culmination of the best strategy games, and the brave and confident Marines of Tempest Rising are up to the task.

So far everything looks very promising and there is much more to come. Schreiber says there are plans to post more of these videos in the future, including information and doctrine, which the team wants to explore in more detail in upcoming coverage. He also points out that it’s still a beta version, which means that everything is subject to change before Tempest Rising hits Steam.

In the meantime, check out the other best multiplayer games on PC if friendly competition isn’t enough for you. Alternatively, the new FPS/RTS Silica hybrid might be right for you.
