If you’ve liked the sound work on adventure games like Control, Evil West, and the upcoming multiplayer shooter Hyenas, then you’ll be a fan of sound designer Justin Andre’s work. PCGamesN caught up with Andre at WASD 2023 in London and we all asked how Control’s greatest musical moment happened and what to expect from Hyenas’ music later this year.

Andre was one of the reasons Control filmed one of his best scenes when Take Control plays the Ashtray Maze level. Take Control was written specifically for the game by the fictional band The Old Gods of Asgard, the alias of the real-life band Poets of the Fall, a Finnish rock band who have been making music for the Remedy games since Max Payne. 2.

“I think we’re starting to see more ideas like this in games,” André told PCGamesN at WASD 2023. “So my role was to make sure the songs fit, asking, ‘It’s totally over budget if we’re going to this track in particular?’ Trying to put the pieces of the musical puzzle together.”

André goes on to explain how games like Control and Guardians of the Galaxy use in-universe tapes and music to iterate on how music interacts with the game, and how that might affect how developers think about copyright issues that may arise in the future. lines in their games.

“The idea of using Star-Lord as a band in Guardians of the Galaxy was brilliant,” says Andre. “Very often when you think about allowing music to be used in games, deep down you immediately think, ‘We’re going to be filmed, what if we move to another platform than mainstream?’ while Guardians It was completely closed.”

“The ancient gods of Asgard do the same and provide a cure in their universe. They’re free to roam all of this and link it all together, but they never run into any of those roadblocks that can come up in terms of copyright restrictions.”

We also got a chance to ask Andre about Hyenas, and while they didn’t say much about the upcoming Total War shooter and Alien Isolation developer Creative Assembly, we learned a few things over the air.

“Music plays a monstrous role in that,” André tells us. “Amongst the various things you’ve probably seen briefly in the trailers, there are some really cool ones.”

You can subscribe to the alpha version of Hyenas for PC, but we don’t have a release date for the escape shooter yet. In the meantime, you can check out our list of the best FPS games available on PC right now.
