There is so much Changes in Counter-Strike 2 Come to think of it, we totally understand if you’ve been having trouble keeping up. While Counter-Strike 2 may seem very similar to its predecessor, the Source 2 engine unlocks a whole new set of mechanics that weren’t available in CS:GO.
Since 2015, the Counter-Strike whisper network has been full of Source 2 conspiracy theories to Counter-Strike 2’s visual enhancements, but Valve has gone all-out with a free-to-play PC game. Fortunately, the Counter-Strike 2 release date is fast approaching: the FPS game will be a free update to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, which is set to release in the summer of 2023.
Changes in Counter-Strike 2
If you are aware of everything that has been announced, you have come to the right place. The Counter-Strike 2 blog post only covers the big changes, but we’ve rounded up all the rumored, unconfirmed, and leaked features in one place, and what they mean for competitive play.
Here is a list of the main changes in Counter-Strike 2:
- Updated and redesigned maps
- New smoke grenade dynamic
- sub-tic system
- Images and sounds reinvented
- In-game bindings, legs and more
Counter-Strike 2 Map Update
The Source 2 engine update brought a visual update for every map, but only a few received a complete overhaul. Valve has divided all locales into three categories: Patch, Update, and Touchstone.
The patch cards were built from the ground up, which means Valve can add or remove a bunch of new boxes, windows, and small parts. Update maps are getting a major overhaul with Source 2’s improved lightning bolt. For example, Nuke looks much more vivid than the dark blue CSGO aesthetic. These lighting changes may have players turning to this rather unpopular map once they get their hands on Counter-Strike 2.
Touchstone maps are the ones that require minimal tweaking like Legendary Dust 2. But you will notice a change in the color scheme in certain areas like the CT spawn, Nether tunnels, and more. The light preset will also apply to Touchstone maps in Counter-Strike 2.

New smoke grenade mechanic.
The multiplayer visual update was expected, but the changes to the smoke bombs took the Counter-Strike community by surprise. Previously, the smoke appeared hollow, but did not interact with external objects. Bullets, walls, boxes and grenades did not move a single smoke. All this will change in Counter-Strike 2.
Smoke in Counter-Strike 2 is responsive and 3D. They can seep through walls and barriers, mix with other types of smoke, and react to bullets. For example, if you fire a bullet at a smoke grenade, you will have a hole that you can look through. As the blast increases, so does the gap it creates.
Monitor Counter-Strike 2 servers
Players asked for a tick rate of 128, but got more than they bargained for. Counter-Strike 2 is tick independent, which means that the servers know exactly when the action is happening.
Previously, the game evaluated actions at discrete intervals, which meant that any action between ticks could be lost. It was barely noticeable to casual gamers, but in high-stakes games every move counts. In Counter-Strike 2, the server updates the game state faster than the tick rate. This means that the server is constantly sending updates to the clients (player computers) instead of waiting for the next tick.
This means that the server can calculate the movements and actions of all players in the game continuously, and not just at discrete intervals determined by the frequency of ticks. This update will significantly improve the gameplay and overall feel.

“Now tickrate doesn’t matter for movement and shooting. The server will know when you shot, jumped, or peeked. And the server will calculate your exact actions between ticks, so you get what you see.” Valve announced this in their Counter-Strike 2: Moving Beyond Tick Rate video.
But returning players also have a downside. The progressive update means that players must create new formations and learn them again. Players have discovered that some service trains are still running, but most of them have become useless. So if you were part of Larry’s CSGO roster, you should come back to the practice server.
Counter-Strike 2 visual and sound effects
CSGO has long been criticized for not being brand friendly. It has weapons, terrorists and blood. Rather than forego realism to appease would-be backers, Valve has now added more gore in an effort to add another layer of strategy to the game.
Targeted Bloodstrikes (which fade over time) will provide players with information as they move through the world. Completely new behavior for water, explosions, fire, smoke, flares, tracers, hit effects and more that contribute to the tactical aspect of the game.
Some gamers will be happy to know that Valve may have taken a page from the Valorant book as well. Sonic Radar is not mentioned anywhere on the official blog, but avid gamers may notice it in some trailer images. When the model walks, a wave appears on the radar indicating how far away enemies can hear you. Valve hasn’t confirmed this yet, but it’s likely a new feature that competitive players can downplay the Counter-Strike stages.
Counter-Strike 2 game accessories and more
There have been a number of leaks stating that jump links are added to the game instead of having to be manually created using CSGO console commands. Instead, all you have to do is jump up and throw a smoke grenade and the smoke should consistently fall where it’s supposed to.
Among other minor additions from Valve added legs to Counter-Strike 2. If you’ve never noticed, CSGO players couldn’t look at their feet while defusing, or look down. At first glance, this may seem a bit scary, but the additional information can help prevent the spread of Molotovs by disabling C4.
On top of all that, Counter-Strike 2 will add new sounds for headshots, punches, and body shots to enhance player satisfaction. You may also notice many small changes to the UI, sound, environment, and purchase menu while playing the game, but these are all major changes that Valve has made to their beloved FPS.
That’s all you need to know about the changes in Counter-Strike 2. With this Counter-Strike Global Offensive we say goodbye. However, the memories we have created of one of the greatest games on PC will continue to be a testament to its unprecedented impact on the gaming community. But let’s not be sad, you should focus on increasing your CSGO ranks before the game officially transitions to Counter-Strike 2.
