Love it or hate it, live service games like Wayfinder and microtransactions go hand in hand these days. Before the official release of the fantasy RPG, I asked Airship Syndicate how they plan to navigate a potential minefield while keeping things fair.
During exclusive playtests with design director Steve Madureira and game director Ryan Ryan Stefanelli, I asked how the developers plan to implement MTX into the game in future updates.
“We’re definitely building on how Digital Extremes has done MTX in the past,” Stefanelli tells me. “We’re not talking about all the details yet, but it’s fair game, not gacha.
“It is based on Warframe because [the microtransactions] It has been very well received by the players: if it’s broken, don’t fix it”, he continues. “We have our own fun twists on the usual stuff based on what services players are expecting and we’ll probably be able to reveal them very soon.”
“During the game it will be possible to obtain all forms of power,” says Madureira. “Characters and weapons level up, and creature attachments and echoes can be equipped on the spot, so it’s an instant gratification cycle.”
Stefanelli goes on to describe the characters and their weapons as “long-term gameplay” and again emphasizes that “everything related to the force can be gained by playing.”
Needless to say, any MTX system will incite anger – one look at Diablo Immortal will tell. However, Warframe has long been praised for its lack of necessary purchases, so it bodes well for Wayfinder’s future.
As I described in the Wayfinder preview, the fantasy game is the perfect choice if you want to play with friends. Who knows, it might even make our list of the best multiplayer games when it launches; We’ll have to wait and see.
