Best Sons of the Forest scenarios It won’t save you from the hungry denizens of a survival horror game, but choosing the right options will provide a frame rate boost. The higher frame rate and balanced visuals will eventually make your visit to the remote island a bit less miserable, as the Sons of the Forest alpha is understandably rough around the edges of performance.
Before you crash into the sequel to The Forest, we strongly recommend that you review the system requirements for Sons of the Forest. Best Survival Competitor isn’t particularly demanding, but if you’re looking to boost your frame rate, you’ll want to stick to Endnight Games’ recommended specs.
That said, if you’re not worried about frame rates or using an older platform, our top tuning suggestions should get your gaming PC out of performance woes. Either way, having an fps monitor will help you find peak performance faster.

Sons of the Forest does not have an in-game testing tool, so we decided to use a specific path to represent typical gameplay. It’s worth remembering that Cannibal Caper is still in Early Access, so we’ll continue to review our customization suggestions as we release fixes and updates.
Forest Sounds Presets
If you’re looking for a starting point, choosing a Sons of the Forest preset will be a great base. However, the performance achieved across the board didn’t deliver the massive frame rate boosts we’d normally expect, making it anything but a performance panacea.
Changing the global setting from “Ultra” to “High” gave us a few more frames, but the result is nothing special. It’s true that erratic frame rates and FPS drops mean it’s hard to take advantage of any minor performance boost, and that’s going to be especially true if you’re gaming in 4K. Again, if that 60 fps is out of your reach, it might be worth making a change.
Changing the preset to medium results in a 6% increase in frames, and images don’t seem to suffer much. So if your team needs help, we won’t judge you for taking the plunge. Sadly, the same can’t be said for the lower end, as while it seems to contribute a whopping 15% frame rate boost, it becomes difficult to see the forest due to the pixelated trees.
Children of the Forest DLSS
Our Sons of the Forest setup tests use an RTX 3070, which means we can take advantage of Nvidia DLSS. Enabling the AI scaler provides a significant boost when using the “Ultra” preset, which offers the same medium frame rate as “Low”. Still a bit jittery, and even the best graphics card tech from the green team couldn’t save us from the occasional crash, but it’ll still make a world of difference.
Children of the Forest Grass Quality
One can only imagine that Kermit the Frog would have loved Sons of the Forest, as its park is full of greenery. If you’re not a big fan of vegetation, you can bring the metaphorical lawnmower to the grass in the survival game by changing the setting to “Low” and you’ll earn some extra marks as pocket money. Just keep in mind that this option will effectively clear the forest floor, eventually making everything less dense.
Sons of the Forest draw distance
Reducing the draw distance even a little will unload your graphics card, allowing you to add a few more frames to the screen. Going from “Ultra” to “High” didn’t seem to interfere much with our long-range vision during testing, but other changes may interfere with your ability to see invading cannibals.

The children of the forest contact the shadows
Touch shadows give Sons of the Forest a layer of visual depth, but turning this setting off can increase your average frame rate by around 5%. Of course, this result can vary depending on the specific areas of the forest, so it is better to take it into account when trying to dig the frames.
Again, future updates are likely to change things, and the Sons of the Forest shortcut patch has already updated the survival game mechanics. We will continue to monitor PC performance for additional tuning suggestions.
Do you plan to fight cannibals on the go? We’ve already tested the Steam Deck’s compatibility with Sons of the Forest, but it might be worth holding off buying specifically for Valve’s handheld.
