Is the Steam platform compatible with Sons of the Forest? If you’re a regular user of Valve’s portable powerhouse, you’re probably anxious to find out if the survival horror sequel works on a portable device. To save you some frame rate trouble, we tested cannibals on a miniature monster, but you may want to wait before playing on the fly.
In a way, Sons of the Forest’s system requirements serve as a warning, helping you run a pathetic open-world race. Fortunately, you won’t need the best gaming PC to visit Endnight Games’ spooky island, as the list is relatively small. However, the Steam Deck is not a typical entry-level setup, and the recommended specs don’t paint the full picture of portable performance.
Is the Steam platform compatible with Sons of the Forest?
Yes, Sons of the Forest is Steam Deck compatible., but it will make the laptop sweat. To avoid performance slideshows and improve frame rate, you should lower the settings to a low level, and optimization issues currently interfere with portable devices. It also seems that using the best Steam Deck is out of the question, since you probably won’t be able to play the game at resolutions higher than 720p.
Just because you can play Sons of the Forest on the Steam Deck doesn’t mean you should, and there are some issues with the laptop that act as a barrier. First of all, you might experience single digit frame rates when a lot is going on and the game can completely crash your system.
While the open-world simulation might be one of the best survival games released this year, it feels like a game from the mid-2000s on the Steam Deck. Even if you can avoid Sons of the Forest’s aforementioned crashing issues, you’ll likely have to put up with sub-30fps gameplay and less-than-stellar visuals. Tradeoffs are a given when playing PC games on the go, but this time around we recommend waiting for an optimization fix.
It should be noted that Sons of the Forest is still in Early Access and may get better Steam platform support in the future. We are also waiting for Valve to comment on whether the game is deemed unsupported, playable or verified, as the overview page currently lists the compatibility as “Unknown”.
