Destiny 2’s difficulty changes will arrive with the Destiny 2 Lightfall release date, according to several updates from the Bungie team included in a recent post titled “Claiming Destiny’s Challenge.” While Destiny 2 Game Director Joe Blackburn outlined some of the difficulty changes in a previous Lightfall and Year Ahead blog post, a more recent post offers a detailed look at some of these difficulty changes, as they include Vanguard. Ops, Destiny 2 Nightfalls, raids and dungeons. .
Some significant changes include the decision to remove Adept difficulty, leaving Hero difficulty available at max power in the game after Lightfall at 1750, while Legend and Master difficulty will be available at max level at 1800. (Power levels for Hero, Legend and Wizard they would be 1770 , 1830 and 1840 respectively.)
The game will also feature power debuffs: -5 for Hero, -15 for Legend, -20 for Master, and -25 for Grandmaster. Eat Lightfall, Bungie will remove Match Game and shields that don’t match the player’s item type will take 50% less damage. Bursts and Threats now replace burns in high-level activities. Waves increase outgoing elemental damage by 25%, with one seasonal elemental wave and one of two alternating elemental waves. In Destiny 2 Season 20, the Surge featured is a subclass of the Destiny 2 Strand, and the Spinning Surges are Void and Solar. On the other hand, threats increase damage taken from enemies by 25%.
Lightfall also fires recharged weapons from various sources that deal 25% increased damage and increased damage (25%) if the Surging subclass is used. The post also covers non-Nightfall scores, Vanguard Ops Playlist Power Down Activities, Vanguard Challenges reflecting the growing number of subclasses currently in progress, and increased difficulty for Lost Sectors, Dares of Eternity, and The Wellspring.
However, the changes quickly raised concerns among players. First, while the post states that Bungie plans to make Lost Sectors more rewarding, it doesn’t mention an increase in rewards in Lost Sectors, giving you a higher chance of better rewards upon completion. Currently, due to the Random Number Generator, players often need to complete Legendary Lost Sectors multiple times before they can receive a significant reward.
Others point out that the Surge feature represents a general nerf to the elemental classes currently in rotation. Since the game will not feature Arc and Stasis as waves during the season, some players have noted that Bungie has effectively nerfed these elemental subclasses. The same goes for overcharged weapons, which grant buffs to certain weapons and reduce indications for all weapons not belonging to those classes.
Players also believe that Bungie designed the difficulty increase to encourage players to spend even more time in the game, which they say is concerning given the game’s attempt to use the additional game time to further monetize Destiny 2 by encourage them to spend money on microtransactions.
It’s still too early to tell if such Lightfall fears in the popular multiplayer game, which is just days away from release, are premature. However, with Destiny 2’s new loading system and mod updates, it seems like Bungie could give players more options to choose how they want to play and then unnecessarily limit them to high-level activities.
