Impressions from the sixth episode of The Last of Us

Also this time we will start the episode with a completely new scene that was not in the original. For a fan of the game who can sometimes get a little bored with watching famous episodes, these passages are among the most interesting and exciting. This is true both in the first minutes of the episode and especially during the later run with the dog. At some point at the beginning of the episode, I had a heretical thought, and whether the creators of the series were going to let Joel die of a heart attack. But it’s actually a clever implementation of the episode’s key message: Joel is scared, very scared. As Neil Druckmann said in a documentary about the making of this episode: “The series provides an opportunity to better portray the inner lives of these characters.“.

Fear and courage

This episode is called “Relatives” and focuses on the results of Joel’s search for his brother Tommy. This brings us to the high-walled city of Jackson, nestled under a beautiful silhouette of mountains. Fans of both games will find a surprising amount of references to both of them here, in other words, it shows once again how the creators like to use the knowledge of where the story is heading after the first season and after the first video game. Of course, we also get one of the most classic video game scenes in which Joel and Ellie have a very emotional “fight” over what they really mean to each other.

While social media is already buzzing with fan reactions to the aforementioned scene (it seems a bit hypocritical of Bella Ramsey to say that she didn’t watch the game before filming so as not to copy it too much – the scene was clearly filmed with the same intonation as in the game), another moment in Jackson struck me much more personally. When Joel confesses his fear, what that fear does to him, what he dreams about in his dreams, and how throughout his life he has repeatedly failed everyone he cares about, we see the complete collapse of the ideal of a “strong almighty warrior” and we’ll see how frightened and vulnerable Joel really is.

Can a person be brave even if he is scared?

As any writer or screenwriter will tell you, we can only experience a compelling story with a hero if they are not too fearless. He must have weaknesses, he must appear vulnerable so that we can worry about him and not expect him to get through any situation without problems. Or, as GRR Martin wrote in Game of Thrones:Can a person be brave even if he is scared? This is the only time to be braveAgain, The Last of Us reminds us of what makes it so much more interesting than other similar stories – the humanity and imperfection of its characters feel much more natural and powerful than most of the competition.

end of the road

While the series can feel a little too rushed at times, it’s probably a good thing that it doesn’t try to stretch the plot too much and, barring really minor additions or variations, moves very quickly from one key moment of the story to the next. another. So, in the last minutes of the episode, we manage to arrive in the city of Boulder and find the Firefly Lab. But, as fans know, here, to put it mildly, something goes wrong. The final minutes are likely to leave viewers as devastated as the endings of past episodes. To make matters worse, we may “expect” a similar depression in the next episode as we have flashbacks, according to the DLC for the game, called “Left Behind”.
