Some mind-blowing secrets await you here that will delight any fan of the cute and colorful world of Slime Rancher, and it’s safe to say that I was literally speechless. While I still can’t tell you how to find this new area, I can tell you a bit more about what awaits you below the sleet dome.
First, the biome itself. Powderfall Bluffs is what you’d expect from a title, but it’s also so much more. A frigid new enclave on bright and sunny Rainbow Island. Beatrix discovers the cliffs of Powderfall hidden under a dome of ice. Now melting, this icy time capsule has revealed ancient secrets within, perhaps still frozen in time. The ice caps left behind are part of what is arguably the most beautiful area of Slime Rancher to date, including snowy expanses, a fiery amber forest, and mysterious caves filled with fossils. However, where you’ll find the Powderfall Cliffs remains a secret even to us, and you’ll have to explore every inch of Amber Valley and Starlight Strand to discover this ancient frozen land.
One of my favorite parts of Powderfall Bluffs is the dynamic snow that covers the ground. Unlike anything I’ve seen in previous Slime Rancher biomes, you can almost feel the soft, crunchy snow as the slimes leave marks and bumps as they bounce or pass by. Stay alert as you explore this snowy landscape, as the soft snow puts a delicious new twist on…snowfighting. Yes, you are reading this correctly. You and the Slime Rancher 2 that inhabit this land can playfully throw snowballs at each other. Find scattered stacks of snowballs or collect them from the new snowball devices in Powderfall Bluffs and start a friendly fight. You can even create a Snowball device to have at your base and play with all your slimes on the farm.
You should also keep an eye out for the other new resources in Powderfall Bluffs, including Perfect Snowflakes, Sun Juice, and Slime Fossils, as they can be used to craft new gadgets. We’ll leave some new stuff for you to discover on your own, but the image at the bottom of the page should give you a clue as to one of the cool new decorations you can create.
It’s a general idea of how beautiful Powderfall Bluffs is, but we haven’t even scratched the surface. As the sun begins to set over the snowy ground, you can see signs of the Northern Lights phenomenon lighting up the sky. So far, once you’ve collected enough phosphor slimes in Slime Rancher 2 (glow slimes that only appear at night), there won’t be any real difference in gameplay between day and night, and you may never sleep without having a real idea of how many days have passed. In contrast, in the Song of the Sabers update, day and night are like night and day, and after sunset, a whole new world opens up for you to explore.
During the day, watch out for the dim glow of rainbows, because under the northern lights they become bridges and ramps inaccessible in daylight. These are auroral anomalies and you’ll also see new plants and trees appearing in the same way, completely transforming the landscape of Powderfall Bluffs into a shimmering masterpiece. Because these roads are inaccessible during the day, venturing under the night sky is the only time you can explore some of these areas. Once you reach the higher elevations, we highly recommend finding a secluded spot and taking a few minutes to look around and soak up the atmosphere, not to mention the twinkling stars overhead.
Appearance is one thing, but what about the new slimes? Well, the title of the update gives it away, but of course, fan-favorite slime Saber is back. Some slimes from the first game haven’t made it to Rainbow Island yet, and they may not, but Saber slime is not only one of the most popular creatures from the prequel, it also made an appearance in Slime Rancher 2 with new mechanics.
These toothy beasts were found exclusively in long form in the Slime Rancher and therefore lacked the small base slime. This is likely because the Saber slime is prehistoric and only survived in those who consumed the few remaining Saber plants. Well, it looks like Beatrix has finally discovered the ancient land the Sabers call home, because the regular Saber slimes are finally here. Make sure you have a well equipped paddock if you return to the conservatory as these guys have great rebound.
I hear you: “So, what are they eating?” If they’re jumping around that much, they must have a pretty healthy appetite. In its long form in the first game, you could feed the Sabers their coworkers’ favorite food, since they didn’t have their own favorite food. However, in Slime Rancher 2, he meets the brilliantly named and beautiful Thundercluck Chicken. Only found in the Powderfall Bluffs biome, these dino chickens have clearly found a way to avoid extinction even while being eaten by Sabers.
Now, I’m told another new slime has joined the fan-favorite Saber in this new realm, but that new addition remains a secret. During the update preview, I was not allowed to see the new slime, nor was I told anything about it.
However, we do know a few things about this new creature, including that it’s incredibly rare, which makes it even more valuable when you find it in Powderfall Bluffs. Perhaps most interestingly, Monomy Park told me that this new slime has a unique new feature. I have to be honest, I have no idea what that could be, but then again, doesn’t it make the hunt even more exciting?
Before we launch into fighting some more prehistoric saber slugs and hunting down the unexpected new friends waiting for us in Powderfall Bluffs, let’s talk about music. I mentioned earlier that Slime Rancher’s subtle soundtrack, until the creepy Tarr Slimes arrive, is just as important as the visuals in delivering the relaxing experience that Slime Rancher offers. Powderfall Bluffs has a brand new soundtrack, so make sure the sound is turned on when you embark on your next adventure.
For current fans of the farming game, there is no denying that this simply stunning new biome will bring you the same feeling as when you first swam into Rainbow Island. If you’ve never traveled further, or even in the Far-Far range, then it’s time to start. Monomi Park has confirmed more “awesome stuff” is coming, with at least one more update on the way before Slime Rancher 2’s full release, and a mysterious story yet to be revealed.
