Does Wild Hearts work on Steam Deck? If you’re considering EA’s answer to Monster Hunter, you’re probably itching to grab it. Valve hasn’t said if it thinks Wild Hearts compatibility is important, but we’ve tested it on a portable powerhouse to keep you out of pocket on launch day.
As always, we recommend that you check out Wild Hearts’ system requirements before you dive into it. This will serve as something of a performance check for portable devices, as the recommendations include an RTX 2070 and 16GB of RAM. You’ll also need to free up 80GB to meet the game’s size requirements, but you might want to hold off on choosing the best Steam Deck SD card.
Is Steam Deck compatible with Wild Hearts?
No, Wild Hearts will not work on the Steam Deck at launch., but there is a silver lining for avid Monster Hunter fans. During a Reddit AMA, a member of the development team confirmed that support for Valve’s handheld devices will not matter at launch. However, they also stated that co-op may receive Steam Deck compatibility status in the future.
Rather than take Koei Techmo’s word for it, we decided to give Wild Hearts a shot on Steam Deck anyway. Result? Well, we made it to the game’s intro story, but the experience was far from stellar. We were unable to push the frame rate beyond 30, even with all settings set to minimum, and the final issue was the icing on the cake. Even if shrinking the images would work, we wouldn’t recommend it, as it doesn’t look much better than Monster Hunter on 3DS.
Either way, it looks like compatibility isn’t entirely out of our league, as we were able to briefly play Wild Hearts on the Steam Deck. That’s not to say we think it “works” on the PDA, as it’s more like a slow walk down a frustrating abyss. However, it does officially support native handheld controls, giving it an edge over other games running on Valve’s handheld power.
