brave it is a game that requires exceptional skills, one of the best gaming pc and stable ping. Good luck staying in silver for a few months if you don’t have at least one of the three. But hardcore fans of Riot’s first-person shooter log into Immortal every day with high pings, poor settings, and unexpected lag. As if playing Valorant at 200ms isn’t an issue anymore, now Riot is pushing the underrepresented region to the back burner for something they can’t control.
On February 7th, Riot reported that players with pings longer than 140ms would experience an inaccurate hit count. Valorant is a game for everyone, but the new server rewind limit excludes a large portion of avid gamers who were already at a disadvantage. The recent Valorant 6.02 patch hints that low ping players are getting hurt by high ping players, which has infuriated some players, and not entirely without reason.
Africa, a populated continent, does not have a dedicated or private server in Valorant. You’ve often seen them on servers in Bahrain pump >200ms, and even more so if they live further away. Who would have thought that they could have an advantage? Well, lucky players with low ping and dedicated servers. The accuracy of the hit registration was already abysmal when the limit was at the 200ms level. Players will still get light hits when below 200ms, but changing it to 140 will make Valorant unplayable for South African players.
Valorant wasn’t ready for the new server rewind limit
Riot has consolidated some of the biggest regions into a single EMEA umbrella, all crammed on EU servers. As a result, there are many teams at a disadvantage, but the main blow falls on the South African players.
South Africa has a strong player base and incredible FPS talent; many professional Counter-Strike: Global Offensive players are proof of this. So when Valorant launched in 2020, South African gamers quickly jumped on the idea, asking for dedicated servers. There was hope at the time, as developer Riot responded directly to community threads.
“I talk to the right people within the company to see what we can do. I can’t promise, announce or commit to anything, but I can tell you that I’ve seen it and will advocate for a solution,” said Korensky Network Engineer in 2022.
Instead, things only got worse. Rather than go ahead and compete at a higher level, patch 6.02 will remove the regular Ranked XP from the entire region. Valorant doesn’t have enough tools to accommodate the thousands of players who still don’t know where to line up.
Compensating for 140ms latency is not enough when most of them are stuck on external servers. The introduction of such a change would be fruitful if it were accompanied by many other new features and servers. This currently only excludes an entire region and players from many other countries.
Do high ping players really have a game changing advantage?
But let’s get one thing straight: The Peeker advantage exists, and it’s terrible. However, in the case of South African players, they are forced to play with high ping or not at all. It’s also worth noting that this small advantage comes with a number of other downsides, such as poor hit record, lag, and choppy gameplay. If you have high ping in Valorant, your only advantage is that you are brave enough to hit. In all other cases, low ping.
In Riot’s own words, “Low latency is almost always better because your player’s actions reach the game server faster than your opponents’ actions. The only difficulty with a high ping player is that it degrades the player’s advantage.” observer for everyone. The thing is, even a 0.5ms difference can make or break next level gameplay, so Riot’s decision to set up the network isn’t entirely wrong, it’s just that Valorant wasn’t ready for it yet. And making such a drastic change based on the “advantage” of high ping is simply wrong. There is no advantage.
Take CSGO as an example. Valve offers a variety of servers for each region, including Africa. CSGO allows you to adjust the in-game ping for region switching so that players can have a smooth gaming experience. Echoing this, if CSGO were to introduce a 140ms server rewind, it might make more sense, as you could argue that attackers randomly jump to other regions to exploit the high ping. By contrast, Valorant requires a strong commitment when opening an account thanks to the locked regions. Once you’re in, you’re in.
This means that if someone has a high ping in Valorant, it’s probably not malice or ulterior motives; they are just queuing for the nearest server.
Unfortunately, no Silver Bullet will instantly satisfy both high and low ping gamers. If Riot plans to install servers in Africa and add new ones in Asia and the Middle East, the problem could be alleviated. But until then, underrepresented countries will remain on the sidelines.
