It’s time to pack your bags for a trip to hell. Darkest Dungeon 2, a turn-based RPG about the psychological toll that an encounter with untold horrors can take on a group of adventurers, is leaving Early Access to release on both Steam and the Epic Games Store, with a release date for the version 1.0 for May. . 8. A free demo of Darkest Dungeon 2 is also available today and can be tried at Steam Next Fest.
Like its predecessor, Darkest Dungeon 2 is all about assembling a team of adventurers and sending them on extremely harrowing adventures. This time, however, the format has changed: your group is driven by a horse-drawn carriage, which developer Red Hook Studios calls “the ride of the damned.”
Your job is nothing more than preventing the apocalypse, and as such, the characters in your party experience quite a bit of job-related stress. As their stress levels rise, they crack under the pressure or discover a hidden inner strength, and during the trip, the relationship between them can strengthen or erode.
The free demo lets you explore two areas of Darkest Dungeon 2: there’s an urban sprawl and Foetor, which takes place on haunted farmland in the countryside. In the demo version, you won’t be able to save your progress between races, but in the full version, rewards will be awarded for each race, which you can carry over to subsequent expeditions.
Narrated by the ever-ruthless Wayne June, Darkest Dungeon 2 is dark and Lovecraftian: it’s like a bizarre fantasy ghost story crossed with Fire Emblem.
