A Steam horror game based on the Resident Evil classic that you can play right now

While we wait for Capcom to one day bring Resident Evil back to its still camera roots, a small team has been developing their own horror game for Steam, with a free demo available now. Titled Echoes of the Living, it channels classic Resident Evil in DNA and is worth a try if you miss Spencer’s Mansion.

Echoes of the Living, developed by MoonGlint, is scheduled for release in Q4 2023, with a free Steam demo available now. From what I’ve played, the demo has all the classic Resident Evil features you’d expect: a fixed camera, tank controls, inventory management, puzzles, and a city overrun by the Walking Dead.

Should I try Echoes of the Living? I would say yes, at least from the demo. It’s a little rough around the edges and there are a few things to keep in mind, but the atmosphere and the way it conveys classic Resident Evil so clearly is remarkable and ripe for fans of the genre.

The tank controls can take a minute to figure out as they are always determined by the position of the player character and not the camera. It doesn’t help a Resident Evil 2-esque opening that surrounds you with fast-moving zombies from the start, but if you push and take some time to get used to the controls, it’s worth it. You can even choose between two playable characters in the style of Resident Evil 1 and 2, so fans of the series’ classics will have plenty to keep them busy.

The best advice I can give you has been given by Resident Evil fans for the past 20 years: don’t kill every enemy if you think you can get around them, watch your inventory, and be careful when and where you save.

With games like Signalis, Murder House, and Tormented Souls all recently receiving acclaim from critics and gamers, there’s clearly still room for fixed-camera horror in the gaming landscape, so we expect a full release of it to be cut. Echoes of the Living. place.

If you want to try Echoes of the Living, you can find it on the Steam page, where you can also list the full version.
