Overwatch 2’s new map, Antarctic Peninsula, takes players to Mei’s home away from home and challenges them to brave fierce snowstorms as they smash heads and collect names. However, since the last location in the FPS game is a control map, how will the Overwatch 2 team ensure that it doesn’t become the site of a Parisian massacre and the Temple of Anubis?
The Overwatch 2 team was once the home of the lovely but deadly Ice Queen Mei. The Overwatch 2 team has been wanting to explore their home away from home for some time now, calling it “a step in the process” of exploring the overarching multiplayer narrative.
With underground caverns, a frozen ship and interactive penguins for the team to work on. Very Delighted with our meeting, I ask what the design philosophy of the card is; Is it the one that encourages teamwork, or the one with long hallways that is perfect for dirty Widowmaker canvases like me?
“Overall, we like to strike a good balance that makes you feel like you have the ability to play multiple different heroes,” level designer Trey Spisak told PCGamesN. «For example, sur le point Icebreaker (with a gros navire), il est un peu plus plat que sur les autres, donc des héros comme Reinhardt, Soldier 76 et des personnages qui ont plus de bottes au sol avec moins de mobilité peuvent être a bit better.
“But when you go down to the sublevel below point A, where, for example, the ice is drilled, there is a lot of verticality, especially around the point. It’s perfect for someone like D.Va or Winston or Genji or Farah. We try to find a good combination.”
I also asked how the team took into account community feedback on the Antarctic Peninsula, especially since fans have talked about older Breach maps, like Paris and the Temple of Anubis, being removed in Overwatch 2 due to persistent backlash. .
While they’re not exactly the same (the Antarctic Peninsula is a control map, after all), the modes are similar enough that tight passages and single-entry areas can still be problematic. Fortunately, Spisak allayed my fears.
“When we develop these new maps, we try not to create such difficult passages, impossible to cross without any other option,” says Spisak. “We try to make sure we don’t have to go back and fix things like that, so we try to stay as focused as possible to keep things looking balanced. We use a lot of feedback from our team to learn about a lot of these issues.”
As someone who has very bad memories of playing in Paris, I am very happy. The Antarctic Peninsula looks great, is rich in lore, and is a whole new take on the iciest places in the game. oh and him too literal penguins – What more could you want?
The Antarctic Peninsula begins on the day of the release of the third season of Overwatch 2, which is already in full swing.
