The most obvious way to fight a Black Blade Slayer is to see it. To do this, you must collect the Sentry’s Torch, a magic torch that reveals invisible enemies. Simply picking up a torch while fighting the Assassin will make it visible.
Of course, getting a torch is easier said than done. You can only get it from the Hermit Merchant by buying it from the Hermit Merchant Hut, which you can’t reach until you’re significantly past the Altus Plateau area.
Crossing the valley covered by a small Erdkhi tree in the middle, you will find it on the eastbound path across the Anarchy Bridge, but then continue your path east. The Hermit Trader’s Hut is northeast of the large gate, which you’ll pass through along the way, while the torch itself only costs 7,000 runes.
Honestly, if you go too far to buy Sentry’s Torch in the Elden Ring, you’ll be strong enough to kill a Blackblade Slayer without it. Here are some approaches you can use.
The first is to wear heavy armor and perform assassin attacks, then counter with your own attacks before dodging them. It doesn’t take much to shock him, so you should be able to get a decent amount of punishment before he gets away. One of your concerns with this approach is the attack bypassing your composure.
To avoid this, you can use one of two strategies, each working on its own to defeat the killer. First, you can watch and listen to the footsteps of the killer in the water. It’s a bad way to find him, but it’s definitely better than nothing. Second, you can invite some Ashes to take you farming and give you a chance to punish the Killer when he attacks your Ashes.
