Overwatch 2 Competitive Changes Show How MMR Really Works

Many changes to Blizzard’s competitive FPS teamplay are coming to Overwatch 2, as the development team revealed how ratings, MMR, and more will change in another update blog, following Aaron Keller’s recent article on the future of the shooter. . .

This Blizzard post follows up on the initial discussion of ranks and rewards in Director Aaron Keller’s Overwatch 2 Developer Review, with the focus now on matchmaking plans, MMR, and short- and long-term goals.

The biggest bombshell here is explaining how MMR (your matchmaking rating, which determines your skill level and who you play with) works, as it doesn’t seem to be directly affected by performance in Overwatch 2.

One of the many questions is: “So you’re not removing kills, damage done, healing done, or any other stat from the board to adjust my MMR after every match?” Question and answer readings.

Blizzard responds: “In Overwatch 2, adjusting your MMR after each match is independent of your performance in each match (regardless of your skill level). This is for several reasons. We don’t want players to focus on anything other than completing objectives and winning the game. Dealing maximum damage or killing won’t help your team if your actions don’t help them increase their payload or capture a control point. Also, for some heroes, especially those in support roles, it can be hard to tell if the numbers they produce reflect their abilities.”

In Overwatch 2 Season 3, you can expect a change in the number of wins between updates, as it will go from seven to five and losses from 20 to 15, and “Season 4 will include additional information about your current competitive wins and losses . .” games.” refresh screens.

Blizzard is also making some general skill mismatch adjustments, which should cause groups or individuals coming together for matches to have a much smaller skill gap, so you won’t have experts teaming up with beginners, for example. The team also acknowledges one-sided parties, but says it is still a long way from any solution.

“Our first step was to investigate the issue and understand the various factors that can cause one-way matches, and we plan to share what we learn with you in a future developer blog.”

You can also expect the MMR roster to change because instead of just working the MMR roster within a team, Blizzard also wants some opposing roles to overlap between two teams. So, for example, two tanks in a match should end up having the same MMR, along with other features, to make matches more balanced.

Blizzard wants Overwatch 2’s ranked and ring matches to be as fair as possible, and all of the above changes are aimed at achieving that goal. “We strongly believe that the most fun Overwatch games are when they’re fair, and our team is committed to finding and implementing new changes and updates that align our game with that goal,” the studio wrote.
