Just over a year after the launch of Battlefield 2042 with controversial new specialists, Update 3.2.0 launches on January 31 to return to the tried-and-true class system of previous Battlefields. The update is scheduled for 01:00 am PST / 04:00 am EST / 09:00 am GMT and brings significant changes to the multiplayer game in addition to reviving the class system.

Going back to the class system has been a hot topic for Battlefield 2042 in recent months. Since launch, Battlefield 2042’s new Specialists, individual characters each with their own unique gadgets and abilities, have caused division. Many players missed out on the simple Assault, Engineer, Recon, and Support roles used in previous Battlefield games, and EA/DICE worked to reintroduce this system in Battlefield 2042 without abandoning the new Specialists or their distinct personalities.

However, finding the balance was not an easy task. Ultimately, the developer decided to organize specialists into class-based categories, limiting the availability of specialist devices within a general class. Class members also share general weapon skills that emphasize their role in combat: Stormtroopers get three extra ammo clips for their Assault Rifles and Scout Specialists, for example, have constant permanent targeting with their sniper rifles.

The update also includes a major overhaul to Breakaway, the Battlefield 2042 Antarctica map, which relocates the oil rig on the map and moves some capture points closer to the mainland. The map also features new routes through the glacier, a snow cave with a downed plane, and additional military fortifications near the worker camp.

Update 3.2 also introduces new thermal scopes, which for the first time in a Battlefield game will only display their effects within the scopes, instead of changing the entire screen like in previous Battlefield games. The team notes that some concessions were made for fun: Heated goggles can see through ambient smoke and vapor effects, but not smoke from tactical grenades or devices.

Full patch notes for 3.2.0 can be found on the official site.

EA/DICE have shared a rough roadmap for the rest of Seasons 3 and 4, so there’s a lot more to come in the next year of FPS games. Check out our list of the best Battlefield 2042 weapons before you check them out tomorrow morning.
