The remake’s mass of venomous undead tentacles can be just as hard to beat as the original, but Motive’s new weightlessness feature is crucial this time around.
Boss fights in Dead Space Remake are rare, but fans of the 2008 version will remember Leviathan. Motive’s take on the behemoth Necromorph looks rawer than ever in one of the best PC games of 2023, but it still takes one annoying move to send Isaac to his grave. All the best horror games usually have one or two difficult encounters, but if you prepare ahead of time, including the best weapon and costume upgrades, it will make the scare swapping much more enjoyable.
Leviathan Boss Fight
You will reach the Leviathan at the end of the sixth chapter in the Hydroponics food storage area and you will have to use weightlessness to start the fight. Before doing this, make sure to use Kinesis to collect floating resources, as this will save you from having to search for consumables in the middle of a fight. We also suggest dragging the explosive containers to an accessible location, as they will provide you with additional firepower.
When you’re ready, swim forward to wake up Leviathan and start the fight. From the start, his mass of tentacles will try to hit you, but you can anticipate attacks by listening to his precursor’s screams and using Isaac’s gravity thrusters to escape danger. You’ll be able to get rid of each appendage by targeting the yellow pocket at the base of it, and by successfully doing so four times, you’ll move on to the next phase of the fight.
Once all four tentacles are retracted, the Leviathan will open its mouth and shoot explosive bags at you. Hitting its mouth with something like a contact beam should help close its mouth, but you can also deflect its own projectiles using kinesis.
Successfully damaging Leviathan’s gruesome center will start the third and final part of the fight, and you’ll have to deal with tentacles, projectiles, and poison gas. If you followed our advice above and collected all the resources around him, you should have an oxygen canister or two in his inventory, and using them will effectively extend the time he has available.
Timing is everything, and defeating the Leviathan requires damaging both its mouth and the festering tentacle sacs from time to time. It takes several hits to destroy each of these, but using Kinesis to launch these explosive rounds should speed up the process. It may seem like a no-brainer, but the key to success is not getting hit, because keeping up is the only thing that will keep you from drowning.
With any luck, the Leviathan should now be floating in the air. We’d love to tell you that it’s the last thing you see the cosmic hole, but unfortunately it shows up to ruin Isaac’s day in a later chapter.
