Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel’s Avengers comes to an end after three years of a live-action game. Although it struggled early on, the superhero game definitely has its merits, so now might be a good time to head over to the Marvel’s Avengers Steam page and grab it, or you can grab it at a deep discount. .
It has been officially announced that Marvel’s Avengers will end as no new content or features will be added after the last update on March 31, 2023, and official support will also end on September 30, 2023.
You’ll still be able to play singleplayer and multiplayer content after that September date, and after the March shutdown, all incoming Marketplace content, challenge maps, and cosmetic content will be available for free as a “token of appreciation.” .
It’s currently unclear if the latest update will add She-Hulk to the game, but it seems unlikely at this point.
Starting in March, all in-game credits will be converted to in-game resources and credits will no longer be available for purchase. This shutdown of the live service portion of Square Enix’s live service game comes less than three years after launch, and while Steam concurrency isn’t everything, when Marvel’s Avengers launched it had around 30,000 players, For that alone, the number quickly dropped to less than 1,000 and rarely goes back up.
While the shutdown of a Marvel’s Avengers game will no doubt upset many, there is a silver lining that could have the community lighting up like a dying star before fading out: a Marvel’s Avengers Steam listing can be bought on the cheap.
The Marvel’s Avengers Steam price is currently $39.99 / £29.99, but if you buy the game on Steam via Humble, it’s $7.99 / £5.99. Marvel’s Avengers on Steam is 80% off until January 27, 2023 and I’d say it’s worth it.. The Avengers is also available as part of PC Game Pass, so you can play it at no additional cost.
All additional Marvel’s Avengers characters (and related story content) are also free. So you get 11 characters (12 on PlayStation with Spider-Man), a single-player story, and a series of expansions of different sizes with story and multiplayer content.
Despite the news of the closure of Marvel’s Avengers, there are many proposals. I got into the game when the free Black Panther DLC came out, and while the live service mechanics might feel like you’re driving a square peg into a round hole, at its heart it’s all a great game. Iron Man was my personal highlight, and after finishing all the singleplayer content available at the time (of which there’s admittedly even more now), I spent some time going through the stuff on the live services, until the repulsors of Iron Man and my interest, ran out of fuel.
I’m not going to tell you that Marvel’s Avengers is a slumber party hit, or that it’s even an incredibly well put together live service game. It does look like a solid co-op action game though that was uprooted and replanted as a live service title and slowly died because of it, but if that’s your thing even the slightest You should check it out for a very low price.
