Crystal Dynamics to end support for Marvels Avengers in March

Crystal Dynamics plans to end support for Marvel’s Avengers, Marvel’s multiplayer game. Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix released the Marvels Avengers licensed action movie in September 2020, and since then there have been performance issues, excessive microtransactions (including those that made it easier to level up a character), and criticism related to repetitive gameplay and mindless mission creativity. All this led to the fact that the game had low ratings on aggregators and sales were lower than expected.

The main story of Marvels Avengers follows the rookie superhero Ms. Marvel as she assembles the disbanded Avengers to defeat the villainous Taskmaster, MODOK, and the sinister AIM Corporation. Since then, Marvel’s Avengers has received a significant amount of post-launch content, continuing the story and adding new heroes (such as Black Panther, Kate Bishop, and Hawkeye), missions, and locations. Unfortunately, however, the game received mediocre reviews and Marvel’s Avengers began to lose players shortly after release.

The fall in popularity of the game may be the reason why Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics plans to stop active development of Marvel’s Avengers. According to eXputer, the company plans to announce end of support after launch as early as next week. The developer’s exit strategy reportedly includes the removal of the artificial temporary lock and an overhaul of cosmetic microtransactions.

The report also indicates that Crystal Dynamics plans to end sales of Marvel’s Avengers sometime after September, though it’s unclear if the company has yet to set a date. However, the studio is reportedly planning to allow fans to continue playing after Marvel’s Avengers is withdrawn from stores.

The next Marvel’s Avengers patch could be the last

eXputer’s sources say that Crystal Dynamics is planning to release the next Marvel’s Avengers patch as planned. This latest update changes the gameplay mechanics, expecting heroes like the Hulk and Captain America to fit in with the rest of the roster. The upcoming Marvels Avenger update also includes several bug fixes.

However, most of Marvel’s planned Avengers content will not see the light of day. Standard features are speculated to include a free patrol mode that will allow players to traverse the game’s largest map while performing open-world activities. Among them will be the new Boss Bounties system, in which players fight various Marvel villains. Crystal Dynamics has also been working on new content featuring the Marvel villain Ultron.

In the boss fight, players would need to plant a series of beacons to take out the rogue AI that invades and defeats the NPC robot Swarm. Other removed Marvel Avengers content includes co-op play and new heroes including She-Hulk and Captain Marvel.

Crystal Dynamic’s plans to complete work on The Avengers first became known back in December. However, the process accelerated after the departure of Brian Wagoner. The game’s main developer, Wagoner, was reportedly fired due to past racist tweets that the company felt made him an inappropriate spokesperson. Crystal Dynamics has no plans to replace it, and the Marvel’s Avengers team continues to shrink as the game nears its end of life.

Crystal Dynamics has officially confirmed that post-release support for Marvels Avengers will end with the release of Update 2.8 for the game on March 31, 2023. Marvels Avengers is available for PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
