Destiny 2’s Exo Dog, also known as Archangel Dog, is named Archie, according to the latest This Week at Bungie article. The dog is part of a secret unsaved mission in Destiny 2 that requires you to shoot 50 drones throughout the Destiny 2 universe and then access a secret room in the Operation Seraph’s Shield mission. Players who interact with the dog while petting it will automatically move the pup to HELM and earn the Guardian’s Best Friend Triumph. It will also give you the chance to purchase a Destiny 2 stuffed dog to celebrate Archie’s role in one of the best first-person shooters out there.
A Bungie blog post outlines the process of designing a dog and determining if players can pet it in the popular space game, using a simulated pink human character model to test the mechanics.
The video shows a first test to see if the game engine will support petting dogs. However, The Guardian’s portrayal of the petted pink creature spawned a number of memes and jokes, including a Reddit post titled “Robo-Dog is cool, but we may have an ugly pink goblin living in HELM.” .
Petting dogs in video games is a meme, and there has even been a Twitter account called @CanYouPetTheDog dedicated to answering the question of whether specific dogs can be petted in video games.
In their post, Bungie confirmed that players will see more of their best robot friends in the future.
“We know many of you really love Archie and are worried about his future,” the post read. They leave HELM at the end of the season, but will return to the Tower in Season 21 looking for new pets.
By the way, astute players have noticed that the mention of the Tower in Season 21 refutes any suggestion that this location will be destroyed in Lightfall. Some enthusiasts have speculated that the sequence of events unfolding on Destiny 2 Lightfall’s release date could result in Tower Social Space being removed from the game, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
