If you remember our review of Dawn of Ragnarok, you remember the line where I said that the game lacked the “feel” of Assassins Creed. While the most recent games, Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla, have been criticized for how Ubisoft’s RPGs deviate from the original games (which I’m not complaining about, I love RPGs a lot), one thing I have to agree on: maps and games getting too big! Starting with AC Unity, I look at the map and think, “Wow, this is taking too long.” And apparently I’m not the only one.

Assassins Creed Mirage will slow down its predecessors a bit when it comes to giant maps. Speaking to GamesRadar, creative director Stéphane Boudon said the community has been at the forefront of creating the latest installment in the series.
“Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla are all great games with the promise of an epic high fantasy journey,” he said. “Their scopes have been calibrated to meet these ambitions as they are all based on RPG mechanics. But among our fans, we’re starting to hear a yearning for a character-driven story centered on the core pillars of early AC on a more intimate scale. It resonates with both us and the developers, and it was the starting point of the project.”
Taking what made the old, small Assassins Creed games so good and applying it to modern development sounds like an exciting prospect. Game length is an ever-evolving conversation, and the amount of time to dedicate to a single game in the face of various streaming services, lifetimes, and adulthood seems to be shrinking every year.
It can also be hard to remember how much shorter Assassins Creed games were compared to their more modern titles. Take Assassins Creed 2 for example, where according to HowLongToBeat it takes about 35 hours to reach 100%. Valhalla, on the other hand, takes 104 hours longer, around 139 hours, to complete 100% of the game. This is also pre-DLC, mind you.
It looks like Ubisoft may not be quite ready to let go of all the details that have become synonymous with their RPGs, however Bowdon warns that Mirage “will have a richer and denser map compared to the first ACs, as well as more playability, more interactions between systems, and more depth.” According to her in an interview:
“With its more condensed scope and clear focus on Basim and his coming-of-age story, our main goal with Mirage is to provide a complete immersion in 9th century Baghdad.” Bodon concluded. “And the main events of that time for the Hidden Ones. We wanted this game to be standalone so everyone would have fun.”
About Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Developed by Ubisoft Montreal in collaboration with other Ubisoft studios, the game follows the saga of Eivor, a legendary Viking leader who left Norway in the 9th century AD due to wars and increasingly scarce resources.
In Assassins Creed Valhalla, players will experience the relentless fighting style of Viking warriors with improved dual-wield combat and experience new features such as raids, settlement building, and equipment progression and upgrade systems. Political alliances, combat decisions, and dialogue options can influence the world of Assassins Creed Valhalla, and players must choose their path wisely to protect their clan’s future.
