MSI unveils its first PCIe 5 SSDs, but some benchmarks aren’t impressive

MSI is one of the first brands to prepare a consumer-tested PCIe 5 SSD based on the new Phison controller and introduce it to the world, but that’s not all. While the next generation has an upper limit that is twice the serial speed of PCIe 4, testing of these early models shows that some numbers are unchanged even from what’s already on the shelves.

We’ve heard a lot about PCIe 5 SSDs in recent years, but most brands are either enterprise-focused or talk without posting. The new MSI Spatium M570 and Spatium M570 Pro, announced at CES 2023, are expected to be two of the first consumer models based on the new technology that you’ll be able to buy in Q2 2023. A similar roadmap tailored competition grows. up, so time will tell who actually comes out first.

They will be available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities and will come with or without a heatsink. If you decide to keep the gorgeous MSI cooler, the standard version will have a bronze-colored aluminum heatsink, while the Pro version will have matte gold fins, each with an MSI shield next to the NVMe socket.

Both run on a Phison E26 controller, but Micron’s latest 232-layer NAND flash makes the “Pro” a superior model, as tests show sequential read and write speeds of 12,000 and 10,000 MB/s, respectively, according to Tom’s Hardware. All of these are well above the PCIe 4 maximum bandwidth of 8 Gb/s and well below the PCIe 5 upper limit of 16 Gb/s for early models, and will only improve over time throughout the year. as technology advances.

Read (MB/s) Write (MB/s)
LAST 1M Q8T1 12,342.11 11,814.84
LAST 128K Q32T1 12,220.23 11,813.43
RND 4K Q32T16 5777.33 5209
RND 4K Q1T1 76.29 252.59

However, the IOPS numbers are a bit disappointing, coming in at just 76.29 MB/s for 4K QD1 random reads and 252 MB/s for writes. The importance of IOPS is often discussed because there are multiple factors that go into different configurations and uses, which means the numbers rarely accurately reflect what you’ll get, but the fact that they’re lower than the best SSDs currently on the market market. , puts the MSI Spatium M570 Pro in a disappointing column. For example, the WD SN850 has a read speed of around 86 MB/s and a write speed of 264 MB/s.

These are CrystalDiskMark numbers that MSI has yet to quote in its marketing materials, so there may be some pre-launch tweaks that address this. Otherwise, it’s just a waiting game to see how quickly PCIe 5 evolves during 2023.
