Games Done Quick founder Mike Uyama has announced he is leaving the speedrunning charity. Uyama, who started Games Done Quick out of his mother’s basement in 2010, says he plans to take a vacation before “numbing headlong into his next adventure.” However, he plans to attend the latest charity event first: Awesome Games Done Quick 2023, which starts on January 8.
“Since I founded Games Done Quick, I have watched it grow from a small volunteer organization to the thriving organization it is today,” Uyama said in a press release. “I couldn’t have done this without the help of Matt Merkle, and the growth of GDQ would not have been possible without the help of the sprinting community, which has grown in size and diversity over the years.”
Merkle, who served as GDQ’s COO from the beginning, takes over the role of owner and general manager, which is being left by Uyama.
“I am honored that Uyama has entrusted me with the future of GDQ and I will do everything in my power to build on the foundation he has built for the organization since its inception,” he said. . “I wouldn’t be where I am right now without Mike and the team he built. It’s amazing how we’ve gone from being a group of friends in a basement to a company of 50+ employees, raising millions of dollars for charity!”
Last year’s Done Quick Summer Games featured Elden Ring Speedrun duels and more. It ended after raising $3 million for Doctors Without Borders.
Launching this weekend, AGDQ 2023 will feature Steven Seagal’s 16-minute, nine-out race on SNES with six players in all vehicles without using PowerWash Simulator soap on PC, and Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin 15 minutes in the style of old souls. There are a plethora of RPGs, FPS games, and old games that talented gamers will speed through as usual.
All proceeds will go to the Cancer Prevention Foundation.
