First-person shooters are the top genre for PC gamers, but it’s no secret that innovation in this area has slowed down in recent years. More and more games choose to focus on proven concepts or follow the latest trends – we bring you Battle Royale games.
So it’s always nice when a developer tries something really original in an FPS game – that’s exactly what indie developers Ammobox Studios did with the sci-fi shooter Eximius: Sixteen The Frontline. The game is a combination that shouldn’t work: a mix of real-time strategy and first-person shooter. But just like the peanut butter and jelly mixture, the results are surprisingly satisfying.
Eximius is set in a dystopian future where humanity has been pushed to the brink by a deadly virus that has caused the collapse of society… so it’s not that far-fetched. The chaos spawned two warring factions, the Axeron Corporation (AXR) and the Global Security Forces (GSF). At the beginning of the game, you will have to choose which side your allegiance will be and fight for the side of your chosen side. Don’t worry, you can still play as a different faction no matter which side you choose.
Axeron is a private research organization turned security entrepreneur, using cutting-edge technology to achieve its goals. This wealthy industrial complex uses drones and robots in both its workforce and military operations, waging futuristic warfare with cold precision. Choose this option to use the full power of technology at your side.
Two sides of every story
The GSF, on the other hand, was built around the principles of protecting walls, rebuilding human survivors, and restoring the civilized world. They command the largest military force on the planet, made up of human soldiers and military equipment like tanks and planes. If you like to fight on the ground, choose this faction.
These factions have their own playstyles, different types of soldiers, weapons, and technologies that you can use. But the mechanic that really changes the way you play is the role you choose. Players can choose between a Squad Officer or a Commander when logging in to fight against other players from around the world.
Officers are soldiers on the ground who fire weapons and perform trench duty. Meanwhile, commanders watch from above in an RTS-style game mode where they deploy AI units and supplies to assist players in the field. As the sole commander of your team, you will have great responsibility in directing military operations, leading his team and providing vital battlefield information as the battle unfolds in real time.
While the commander watches from above, the officers do the dirty work. As an officer, you’ll wield a variety of powerful weapons, each of which can be upgraded with various tactical features to make you even stronger. As you play, you’ll earn money, which you can then use on upgrade stations to upgrade your equipment – stations that your commander can place. Be sure to contact them to place it in the most beneficial location.

Go far enough in the battle and you will be able to summon a combat suit that will greatly increase your combat power. Battlesuits add a whole new level of strategy, giving players increased survivability as well as additional options to use. These abilities include defensive abilities like shields, offensive abilities like upgraded weapons, and tactical abilities like creating spears to fool enemies.
Matches take place on large, intricately detailed maps based on a post-apocalyptic depiction of Earth. Each card contains three victory points that must be captured and held to reduce the enemy’s score. Deplete the opposing team’s 500 points and victory will be yours, but don’t rush into mindlessly adding victory points. Careful planning and tactical communication are paramount at Eximius. Your commander’s role is important to understanding the unfolding of the battle, and your bird’s-eye view provides important information for the rest of the team.
You can also join friends (or strangers) in cooperative missions. In these specially crafted operations, you’re up against fearsome AI enemies who will stop at nothing to stall your progress. With four levels of difficulty, you’ll need to be smart and have even quicker reflexes to beat them all.
