No More Heroes III Review – Intergalactic Skirmish

Goichi Suda is a Japanese designer and incredible fool who has brought us a bunch of really unconventional games over the years, including Journey to the Underworld in Shadow of the Damned, Buffy’s pink variation, the vampire slayer in Lollipop Chainsaw, killer7’s breakthrough, Vampire Blood+: One night stand or the killer is dead. Among the owners of the successful Wii console, he then established himself with the excellent No More Heroes series, which introduced the peculiar hero Travis Touchdown, who, with the help of his light katana, cut his way into the rankings of the world’s best killers. Since then, the brand has had several spin-offs, and in August of this year, the full-fledged third part was finally released, which we have been waiting for an almost incredible 11 years. But was it such a long wait? You could say yes, but you cannot expect any revolution, not even evolution.

space threat

Anyway, let’s start with history. As most fans know, Travis has been ranked twice by the United Assassins Association (UAA) to become the best assassin in the world. And this time he will be given a very similar task, but the fight will take place on an intergalactic level. The country, and especially the famous city of Santa Destroy, has been occupied by the alien forces of the Galactic Super Hero Corps, commanded by Jess-Baptiste VI or Prince FU. But since Prince FU has a weakness for challenges and games, he decides to give humanity a chance, which is that someone has to beat the top ten “superheroes” in the galactic rankings. And who else should have a choice other than our favorite botanist and member of the otaku community, Travis Touchdown.

This time, Travis must defeat 10 galactic “superheroes”.

The skeleton of the story is really very primitive and straightforward, following the previous parts, which does not matter, because in this case it depends mainly on its presentation. As is customary in the series, you will find really crazy and somewhat childish humor, with the characters regularly getting into completely crazy situations during which they make one message after another. Along with that comes the still funny tearing down of the fourth wall and, above all, a huge number of different pop culture references in which Suda proves once again that he is, above all, an incredible fan. Whether it’s the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Alien, Terminator, Star Wars, Final Fantasy, Twitch, Netflix, the arcade era, a variety of anime and manga series, or the provocative director Takashi Miike, nothing is left behind. Moreover, this “flight” is emphasized by epileptic visual representations, which together form a single whole, which you either love or hate. However, by no means should you be judged. In any case, it may be a slight disappointment that, in our opinion, there is no more serious subtext this time.

empty city

As is usually the case with games, the level of storytelling is complemented by the game itself, which remains true to the first part of the series. This means the mainstay is the local boss fights, which are traditionally absolutely great. Their designs are creative, as are their mechanics, and your expectations will keep changing. Of course, this is already the third mark in the series, so sometimes you can notice a slight wear of the material, but thanks to the long pause from the second part, this does not matter much.

The gameplay remains true to previous works.

Unfortunately, it was decided that the open world would return, which we would not want to return to, since it suffered exactly the same problems as the original 14 years ago. This means it’s a completely dead background that looks like something fell out of another PlayStation. And even a motorcycle from Akira will not help. Local activities, which in most cases are reworked from previous parts, do not work much, so you can go to collect garbage, cut grass, race or protect the coast from the invasion of alligators. It may seem funny to you the first time, but the second time it bothers you. And it doesn’t help that the very cycle of video games in which, in order to engage in a boss fight, you must first win a certain number of qualifying matches, and then get enough money for the reward. In the first part, it could humorously point to everyday life, but in the third part, it is quite annoying.

bloody ballet

However, the combat system will keep you from getting tired in this part of the game, in which you will unleash an incredibly spectacular and predatory bloody ballet that successfully combines movements with buttons, thanks to which you will be even more involved (but you can choose to control without movement). It is true that the system can be quite simple when you only combine light and heavy attacks, which you sometimes supplement with one of the four special abilities of your “deadly gauntlet”, wrestling hold or “ultimatum”, but even so, each Won in you the contraction leaves a pleasant feeling in the lower abdomen.

Fights are predatory and productive.

On normal difficulty, gunfights are easy and you won’t die often. And if this happens, the game will offer you a roulette wheel where you can collect the bonus until the next try. However, if you want to make it even easier, you can visit the DonMai Sushi Shop, where you can buy various delicacies that will give you additional bonuses, such as improved health or strength in the next fight, while you can get some pieces packed with themselves so that they can be used directly in the fight against faith. In addition to classic coins, you will also collect a currency called WESN, which will allow you to improve various statistics in the laboratory. For additional raw materials, you will also create special chips that will give you bonuses for your play style, which you can experiment with.

Painful running

However, a fairly significant part of the overall impression is the flow of the game. No More Heroes III was released exclusively for Nintendo Switch, but the optimization was not very successful. While the game typically runs at 60fps in combat, when exploring the open world or cutscenes, it sometimes drops well below the 30fps limit, which isn’t really great. In addition, the sound with the image was launched several times, and the ubiquitous invisible walls will not please you at all.

The flow of the game is an important part of the overall experience.

Also, if you’re playing on a large screen, the image is usually uncomfortably blurry and out of focus due to the lower resolution. From this point of view, it is better to choose the portable mode, in which the fluency is worse. So I strongly hope that after some time this part, following the example of its predecessors, will look on the PC, where you will feel a little better (assuming good optimization).

Finesse for fans

However, fans of the series are sure to enjoy No More Heroes III to the fullest as Suda51 once again offers them exactly what they love so much. A bunch of pop culture references? Yes! Lost humor? Yes! Great bosses? Certainly! Fun fights? Certainly! Therefore, it is a pity that, along with all this, significantly outdated elements have returned today, without which it would be better.
