Dwarf Fortress update removes graphics

It’s not often that you get a patch that Remove the graphics are from the game, but the option added in the latest Dwarf Fortress update does exactly that. The latest patch, which updates the Steam version of the colony management game Ur to version 50.04, adds a “classic mode” that removes the new color sprites and returns Dwarf Fortress to its original ASCII beauty.

The new version of Dwarf Fortress looks absolutely stunning, and it’s infinitely easier to read what’s going on right now. The old ASCII rendering has its charms, though: there’s something about the little emoji representing gnomes that adds to their mystique and makes everything feel more sinister and weird.

A new “classic mode” option can be found in the settings menu, and you can switch between new and old images at any time.

The 50.04 update for Dwarf Fortress also updates the etched walls, adds graphics for some outdoor harvested plants, adds custom symbols (we don’t know what that means yet), and includes Steam Trading Cards.

“Collect them all! Or not,” advises Bay 12 Games.

The patch notes are available on Steam and include the happy news that the success of Dwarf Fortress since its release on Steam has seen Bay 12 hire two more people to work on the game.
