Final Fantasy 16, the next role-playing game in Square Enix’s massive open-world series, has received an official M rating from the Entertainment Software Ratings Council, meaning it’s recommended for users ages 17 and up in Canada and the United States. The game reportedly contains nudity, mature themes, gore, and profanity, making it perhaps more explicit FF than we’ve seen in the past.

“Battles are fast-paced with impact noises, screams of pain, and large explosions,” reads the ESRB description of Final Fantasy 16’s M rating. “Blood spatter effects often occur when characters are injured and killed. Cut scenes depict additional acts of violence and gore: the character’s arms are severed by a sword; the guard’s throat is slit with a knife; pierced figure on the chest; the shoulder of a prisoner, pierced and twisted by the sword of an interrogator.

It already feels more brutal than Final Fantasy 15, which is rated Teen by the ESRB, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is also rated Teen. But that’s not all: The ESRB lists “blood and gore, partial nudity, sexual themes, profanity, [and] violence” as everything that contributes to the certification of Mr.

“The game contains sexual content,” the Council continues. “Character caressing and straddling a man in bed; references to prostitution; sexual moans are heard in a brothel; dialogues like: “I’d be happy to show it to you…if I can afford it” and “…thank you for your service. My bedroom is upstairs. Some figures are depicted with partially bare breasts and buttocks. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” are heard in-game.

We’ll have to see for ourselves when Final Fantasy 16 ends its six-month PS5 exclusivity and hits PC in late 2023 or early 2024, but it looks like the RPG series has gotten a little bolder.
