Laptops are a waste, whether it’s your gaming laptop, laptop, or Steam Deck. These systems lack the maintainability and upgrade potential of their desktop counterparts, forcing you to buy a whole new device after a few years if you want something more powerful, creating a significant amount of e-waste. Enter the Dell Concept Luna, which hopes to change manufacturing processes to allow for more reuse and recycling in the future.
Dell has made a few updates to its prototype since its introduction last year, and I can only hope it finds its way to the top of the company’s best gaming laptops. For those unfamiliar with the Concept Luna, it’s basically a modular laptop, similar to the ones Framework makes. However, it goes a step further by trying to remove all the screws needed for mounting, plus annoying ribbon cables.
In practice, this makes it extremely easy to replace components inside a laptop and, dare I say, even easier than on a desktop PC. In a video demo provided by Dell, disassembling the entire Concept Luna is effortless and takes just a few minutes, including the display. This, of course, should make the devices more repairable and reduce the time for diagnosis and repair by human and robotic hands.
The desire to reduce the more than 57 million tons of e-waste that ends up in landfills each year is a noble goal in itself, but modular designs can benefit both consumers and the environment. Let’s say your CPU and GPU are lagging, but you’re otherwise happy with everything else on your gaming laptop; Wouldn’t it be great if you could replace the motherboard for a much lower price? You won’t have to put up with faulty components like a damaged screen or unreliable USB input either, as you can simply replace them.
It’s impossible to say when, if ever, the Concept Luna will go from being a prototype to a working laptop. For now, companies like Framework are your best bet if you want something you can upgrade in the future and reuse parts to build other systems. We hope that the future of the Modular Steam Bridge is not just pure science fiction, for the benefit of consumers and the planet.
