HW Test: Turtle Beach Recon 500 Gaming Headset

It’s not every day that we get a console-focused gaming headset – and on consoles of all three families, including past and present generations. However, it is these platforms that the Recon 500 is aimed at, which, thanks to a simple 3.5 Jack connection, can work with the Switch, as well as previous and current generation PlayStation and Xbox. Of course, you can also use it with little effort on PCs (or mobile phones with the appropriate connector), but its main purpose is clearly consoles, which, thanks to the dual transducer solution, offer surprisingly high-quality sound. at a reasonable price.

Strength in simplicity

The Recon 500 doesn’t try to offer any extra features, but instead puts an emphasis on simplicity and efficiency, so you can take it straight out of the box with the relatively shorter (1.3m) braided cable that’s non-detachable – the length is equivalent to plugging it into the drivers in hands (Xbox, PlayStation) or in manual mode Switch console in hands. On the headset, you’ll find a rotary knob for volume control and a large recessed button for mute, but nothing more. Don’t even look for any lights: the headset is wired and therefore has no built-in battery.

The headband is reinforced with elastic metal (so there is no risk of breakage after a year or two, like some similar headsets) and pleasantly fitting double-hinged memory foam earbuds covered with textile fabric. The angle and material solution, referred to as the “ProSpecs Goggle Lightening System”, ensures that the headset does not put unpleasant pressure on the headbands, even for players who wear goggles during the game, despite their relatively precise fit to the ears. The overall impression of the headset construction can be described as solid yet pleasantly light and well fitting. But the best thing about it is the sound itself.

Really good sound

While the design and features of the headset are intentionally simple, the manufacturer really took care of the sound: it uses unique 60mm dual transducers with separate chambers. Half of this dual system focuses on the treble and the other half on the bass, which in turn delivers a truly amazingly rich and accurate sound across the entire spectrum. Its sound is further enhanced by the material itself, as “AccuTune” technology uses composite wood pulp injection for an all-new interior design that delivers a rich and natural sound. I am used to using much more expensive headsets, but I must admit that I was very pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. In terms of technology and material, the headset also does a very good job of setting the maximum volume (but in this case, some of the sound from the headphones can get into your microphone).

If you want to connect a headset to a PC, and your machine has a pair of audio jacks (one for headphones and one for a microphone), you will need a splitter for this 3.5 jack jack – or you will only be able to use one of the functions (listen or microphone). Laptops usually have these features connected to a single connector. Unfortunately, there is no official companion software for adding bass or anything like that on your computers. On PlayStation and Nintendo consoles, you may not be able to easily change the volume ratio between chat and game, but of course you can solve this problem by traditionally changing the volume settings of the game. The microphone deserves special attention: the single-sided TruSpeak microphone with noise reduction technology is detachable (partially flexible) and provides very clear sound when communicating with teammates. In any case, in the lower price categories of closed headsets, this is an excellent choice that can be safely recommended.

You can order the headset on the manufacturer’s website, but it’s also easy to find in Czech stores.
