Valve wants Steam Deck 2 to have better battery life and a better display

At the moment, Steam Deck 2 is not an open secret: Valve has repeatedly confirmed the existence of the device, and fans are looking forward to the updates that will be presented there. While we don’t yet know when we can expect the successor to the popular portable powerhouse, we do have an idea of which stat deck the developers want to improve.

The obvious upgrade for Steam Deck 2 would be to replace the existing custom APU with the best AMD Ryzen 6000 or 7000 series gaming processor Valve can use. This will help the handheld to better keep up with competitors like OneXPlayer 2 by improving its performance.

However, Steam Deck designers Lawrence Young and Pierre-Loup Griffet are reportedly focusing their efforts on improving the battery life and display of this upcoming PC.

Speaking to The Verge, they say Valve will “prefer to keep a performance level a bit longer and will only consider changing performance levels when there is a significant gain.”

Since Steam Deck 2 is unlikely to feature radically different hardware than its predecessor, it’s safe to say that the better Steam Deck base and other accessories will be backwards compatible. However, we’ll have to wait and see when Valve finally pulls back the curtain on its shiny new handheld to be sure.
