Side quests are why I keep coming back to The Witcher 3

It seemed like a normal job. Find a monster that is bothering the nearby villagers, crush it, bring a trophy and collect a solid reward. But approaching Ktivin, Geralt caught a suspicious smell of decaying flesh. The village was empty and completely silent. Except for a group of alghouls who fed on one of the corpses.

The “routine business” suddenly turned into a tangled story about peasants who died because of their greed and hatred. And Geralt had to play the judge and, possibly, the executioner.

It is the quest “When the cat plays with the wolf” that makes the third “The Witcher” special for me. The main storyline about a pale man in search of a girl who became his daughter carries touching moments, funny meetings with old friends and decisions about the future of the entire empire. Side quests and little offshoots that sort of grow out of the story of Geralt and Ciri, but they complete the whole world, and after these few years, these are the ones that I remember the most.

They usually start with the simple “find, kill, and bring back” quest that’s so common in the RPG series (and even the Witcher can’t avoid them sometimes). But gradually they develop into something more complex with moral overlap. It should not be so much the content of the task, but the words spoken by the secondary characters, or Geralt’s dialogue options. At the very beginning, in the “training” area of Belosad, the white-haired witcher is looking for the monsters that attacked the merchant’s van. However, even here, he finds that things are a bit more complicated, because the bloodthirsty monsters were (however) people who had their more or less good reasons.

It is in these tasks that Geralt’s humanity will most manifest itself – if the player wants to do it. The characters in the game repeatedly show their dislike not only for monsters, but also for warlocks. To their practices, how they earn money, or simply to their appearance. And therefore, at the end of even a small task, Geralt can show everyone how wrong they are with his words or actions.

In addition, through several more extensive side quests, the player influences not only the fate of the robbed buyer. He can decide the future of Redania, the new ruler of the Skellige Isles, or whether his evil witcher friend will survive the epic battle for sure.

Whether you’re returning to The Witcher 3 thanks to a new next-gen version, or you’ve never played the game and now is the perfect time, let’s recap some important or interesting side quests you shouldn’t miss. Which one is your favorite?

ATTENTION! If you want to avoid spoilers, omit explanations under the quest names.

The next generation version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released on December 14 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It’s free for game owners.

Return to Crooked Swamp

End of the Bloody Baron story. In an earlier quest, Geralt received an offer from a mysterious ghost: if he frees him, the ghost will save the children from a trio of witches. Now the witcher will find out what impact his decision had not only on the children, but also on the nearby village and on the baron himself. Either way, someone dies, and this is one of the many moments in the game where you can’t count on a happy ending.

Tower full of mice

During the game, Geralt runs into an old acquaintance, the sorceress Keira Metz. Together with her, he can then continue a series of side quests that will lead the couple to a cursed island infested with rats. Gradually, the player will have to explore the tragic past of a gloomy place where a young girl, Anabel, once died a terrible death.

However, a series of tasks gradually leads to a pleasant evening with Keira (how pleasant it is for you to decide) and a decision that could cost the life of not only her, but also another witcher, Lambert. It all depends on the choice of words.

Last wish (Last wish)

Geralt can have a good time with two more witches, and it is up to you whether the witcher will be faithful to only one of them. Whatever you decide, the side quest with Yennefer is important anyway to flesh out her shared past with Geralt.

The two go in search of the genie who once brought them together with the help of magic. Yennefer believes that once the spell is lifted, their relationship will become clearer. If you choose to forego the black-haired witch at the end, you’re in for a poignant yet adult denouement.

Now or never (now or never)

Similarly, the sorceress Triss will offer the player a side quest at some point in the story. It features a canal walk, a vampire fight, and an interesting bonus dialogue with Dijkstra. However, if you help her save the magicians in Novigrad, the witch hunters will choose another victim.

Where the Cat and the Wolf play… (Where the Cat and the Wolf play…)

The task from the beginning of the article, which leads Geralt to a difficult decision: to fulfill the promise made to the little girl and avenge the death of her loved ones, or to sympathize with an angry (and a little crazy) colleague? This is one of the frequent moments in the game when there is no correct choice and it is up to you what you consider the “lesser evil”.

carnal sins

The content of this task is completely different, because the witcher here becomes a detective. After attacking Marigold’s beloved troubadour Priscilla, Geralt searches for a serial killer who is terrorizing the entire city. But a complex search for clues and dialogues can very easily end up not revealing the real killer.

Ownership

On Skellige, Geralt can choose a new ruler of the islands after the death of King Bran. Even before the decision that will affect the future of the northerners, she has the opportunity to help the red-haired brothers and sisters in their efforts to prove themselves as strong leaders.

The possession is related to Cerys’ desire to help Jarl Uldarik with the curse on his island. If you decide to trust Cerys and follow her plan, there will be a rather painful moment when you play the gingerbread house witch.

Lord Undvika

A side quest related to Cerys’ older brother Hjalmar. He tries to kill the frost giant on the island of Undvik and show that he is a great and strong warrior and therefore a capable candidate for the throne. During the mission, you travel through a snow-covered landscape, which, together with great music, creates an atmosphere like from Scandinavian legends. The advantage is that you can complete quests with both Hjalmar and Cerys, get to know the red couple in person, and decide who will be the best ruler of Skellige, only in a later quest.

Dream Cave (Dream Cave)

In this Skellige side quest, Geralt and a group of bearded warriors set off to explore a beautiful cave full of blue lights. Inside, their biggest fears and anxieties await them, which they must deal with. Eventually, it will reach Geralt as well. At the same time, the quest is easy to miss if you go too deep into the story.

In the heart of the forest

Again, a task arising from “ordinary” work. A village on Skellige is being terrorized by the Forest Spirit. Well, so says one part of the population, the most progressive. Another, conservative part claims that the village needs him, because his magic and strength make the warriors stronger there. Geralt eventually discovers that it is actually a leech and is able to kill it. In any case, returning to the village is not entirely joyful…

Cause of the condition

If you complete a series of tasks, you will face the possibility of ending the life of a bully. Radovid will most likely drink your blood throughout the game, so killing him can be tempting. But this act will fundamentally affect the end of your game. The end of the mission itself also matters when you only have a brief moment to choose whether to stand as the popular Temerian commander and guerrilla Vernon Roche or master spy Dijkstra.

Side quests are a reason to return to The Witcher 3 even now.

The tax collector comes

A small quest from the DLC Heart of Stone, but in its essence very fancy (and most importantly, funny). At the moment when Geralt accumulates 35 thousand crowns, the tax collector Htibor Pratska stops him in Oxenfurt and starts asking about his affairs. The questions essentially allude to the countless ways that players have come up with over the centuries to cheat the game and earn extra money. If you didn’t use at least two of these tricks (or lied to the clerk’s face, shame on you), you will receive a reward.

Without a trace

Again, this quest is taken from the aforementioned expansion. It concerns an herbalist who is looking for his missing apprentice. The tracks lead to a strange village in the forest, which is completely empty. Except for an elderly couple and a cellar with ugly contents.

horse phantoms

This quest comes from the Blood and Wine DLC and focuses on Geralt’s loyal mate, a mare who, for inexplicable reasons, climbs rooftops from time to time and always appears after whistling “I’ll knock.” After drinking the hallucinogenic concoction, the protagonist finds that he can talk to his brown horse for a while, so they go on a mission together that is not dark or taken too seriously.

Mutual Wild Kingdom Beauclair

A modest quest in the Blood and Wine DLC that leads Geralt to the Silver Basilisk, the last of its kind. Unfortunately, the monster kills people, but as you will gradually learn, there are reasons for this. Here, Geralt faces a difficult choice: either he remains a true witcher and becomes the one who exterminates a rare species, or he finds in himself a defender of biodiversity.

Can be only one

Another quest from the same expansion, which is not very long in itself, but will remind you how The Witcher 3 keeps track of even your small, seemingly unimportant decisions. If you’ve proven your virtue in the DLC, such as saving Charlie’s life during the tournament, the hermit at Selawy Lake recognizes Geralt as worthy of a duel. As a reward, you get Aerondight, one of the best silver swords in the game, which can be upgraded along with Geralt.
