Dwarf Fortress patch adds new werewolf visuals

With the latest Dwarf Fortress patch, werewolves will look a bit more distinct. Update 50.03 adds a total of 72 new werewolf tiles, which come with a surprising amount of variety in this particular colony management game. The revision also fixes many problems and makes it easier to choose materials for your buildings.

Dwarf Fortress developer Tarn Adams said the new werewolf art includes 72 new werewolf illustrations. In the legacy version of Dwarf Fortress, they were represented by the character Ñ, a capital N with a tilde above it. You could tell which beastman you were looking at by pulling the information card from him.

This system has allowed Dwarf Fortress to get quite creative with them: in addition to the more traditional werewolves and werebears, you can also encounter creatures like werewombats and capybaras on your procedurally generated journeys.

Now more of these strange creatures have special images that show what they are at a glance (and, of course, add more visual flair to your scenes of mindless destruction and mayhem). Adams does not specify which creatures have the new art, so we will have to wait for a herd of striped zebras to knock on the doors of our fortress.

Perhaps most usefully, this patch also fixes various crashes, including those that could occur when sorting pets and livestock by tamable status, storing items in new slots, and displaying the team loadout screen when you have multiple squads on the move.

The patch also adds new ambient sounds for wilderness, forests, grasslands, rainforests, and sieges. Additionally, you can now add or remove each item of a specific building material when building a structure that requires multiple units of material.

The full 50.03 patch notes are available on Steam.
