Review of Back 4 Blood – bloody muzzle

Let’s start with the obligatory fact that the latest zombie slaughter comes from the studio behind the original Left 4 Dead, of which Back 4 Blood is more or less the third installment, albeit called differently due to license. . So if you’ve played the previous two games, you have a pretty good idea of what to expect. The difference lies in slightly better technical processing, as well as novelty in the form of gradually unlocked modification cards, thanks to which repeated playthroughs are more noticeable.

Weapons and maps

While the game contains a pretty decent amount of movie scenes (including pre-rendered narration), it’s hard to tell a meaningful story. Almost all of them show only general action scenes in which our heroes deal with hordes of zombies with a smile, so from time to time they are surprised by a new, larger or more dangerous mutation. As for the history of the world and its characters, an event nicknamed “collapse” just happened and since then it has been a struggle of the living against the undead. At the same time, you go on your expeditions with temporary fortresses that serve as a base where you return between individual chapters of the story to purchase new supplies (modification cards), customize the appearance of your characters or weapons, or try out any equipment at the shooting range.

What upset me a little is the inability to more precisely influence your weapons for a new mission. You can only partially do this by choosing a character, because each character starts with a specific pair of weapons (one large rifle and one small pistol). But none of the playable characters start with a machine gun or a desert eagle (two of my favorite post-campaign weapons). So it remains to be hoped that you will find your favorite weapon during the mission itself. Not to mention that you always start without upgrades (like scopes, shock absorbers, large magazines, etc.) that also need to be collected during the mission itself. Missions are grouped into so-called “runes”, which always include several missions together, and if the whole team dies twice, you return to the beginning of the current mission without any equipment collected. In other words, inconsistent weaponry is a bit of a power, but again, thanks to this, you have more adrenaline and motivation not to spoil the set “run” so as not to lose the weapon.

You should hope to find your favorite weapon during the mission itself.

But what will remain of you forever are unlocked maps. Thus, the main motivation for replaying is to accumulate “supply points”, for which you then open new cards. You can then create decks from all the cards you have collected, which you will take with you to your next gaming session. There can be up to 15 cards in a deck, and during the game they will be available to you during individual missions in the order you put them in the deck. Cards have a very significant impact on the style and difficulty of the game, the most effective being “killing every enemy that heals your low health character” or “if someone on the team goes down, the rest will continuously recharge for the next 20 seconds. “However, there are many types of cards and it will be convenient for someone to save cards for additional ammunition, etc.

Gunfight, AI, Multiplayer

As in any shooter, of course, the most important feeling here is the so-called “shootout”. I am happy to confirm that the game works very well in this direction. I have always said that a good shooter can be recognized by the fact that even the weakest pistol can kill the enemy with one blow to the head – otherwise the feeling of the effectiveness of the weapon does not seem hard and real enough. Here you can easily headshot with regular pistols, but in addition to that, you will also enjoy the bloody slicing of enemies with machine guns or fully automatic shotguns. The implementation of the DualSense features to play on PS5 (or PC!) is also nice in this game, which definitely contributes to a good shooting experience. Slightly worse is the variety of enemies, where in addition to the main zombies, we have already seen all the special mutations in previous studio games. Fortunately, here we find at least a unique final boss that really impressed.

Of course, I don’t expect some wonderful AI from zombies and monsters, it’s enough that zombies sometimes have more bullets than you have, and mutants have very annoying immobilizing attacks, so there is natural respect for them. However, intelligence is a noticeable weakness of bots if you can’t find four live players (friends or random players) in a group. They no longer place bets like they did in the beta, but are still often slow and indecisive. However, if you die, you can take control of one of them. The campaign can be played solo, but you won’t get supply points in this mode, so it’s a waste of time.

In addition to the co-op missions, the game also has a Swarm mode where 4 players fight alive against 4 players as undead in a small arena, but this mode seemed downright boring, although the time limit and the shrinking arena try to keep up. while players change parties (living/undead) during each round. In my opinion, it is very unfortunate that the creators did not allow players to control monsters directly during the campaign (similar to the invasion of Deathloop or Dark souls), but according to them, they decided so because the runes are long and did not want to upset the players with their unpredictable difficulty at the hands of other players. However, the co-op campaign certainly has its strengths (especially memorable was the extra-long and incredibly intense mission in the quarantine military camp, as well as the descent into foreigner nests or the already mentioned final boss fight) and if you have good teammates, then this is a worthy rest, moreover, it is available “for free” in a Game Pass subscription.
