Portal, Half-Life and Left 4 Dead writer Eric Wolpaw hopes Valve will one day achieve a “triple something” as he discusses ideas for a possible Portal 3 and reflects on his work on an FPS game, Steam and a developer. from Dota 2.

Having worked on episodes of Half-Life 2, both Portal and the original Left 4 Dead, Wolpaw has contributed to some of Valve’s most beloved games and most recently worked as a writer on the Aperture Desk Portal spin-off.

With Half-Life’s central story still unrevealed since 2007’s Episode 2, and Portal fans hoping for a sequel in 2011, Valve has earned a reputation for turning down game series before completing trilogies. Wolpaw says the company’s employees are often busy with other projects.

“It seems that the number system is working against us,” says Walpaw in an interview for the YouTube series “Do you know what games they are?”. “We did Half-Life 2, then we did 3, but it was one episode, so maybe it was just luck. I think Valve employees continue to get involved in other things. One day, I hope there will be 3 something.

Wolpaw also explains how he and fellow Valve writer Jay Pinkerton pitched ideas for a possible Portal 3, saying that the game’s concept is still lacking in details and hasn’t been officially unveiled, but he has a “real idea.”

“Jay and I have an idea that we think is pretty good for what’s going to happen, generally speaking. We don’t have a script or elaborate details, but we kind of have a starting point that we really like. The fact that we have this idea and that we are really committed to making the game are two different things. It’s known, but Valve doesn’t have a formal submission process either. It’s always some kind of mass campaign. There is still a lot to do, someone has to come up with new puzzles for the portal, but we have a real idea, yes.

A new unofficial Half-Life VR game based on Half-Life Alyx launched in early November, and the Aperture Desk Job continues to burn the Portal torch with its Steam Deck release in early 2022. Wolpaw also previously spoke about Portal 3, stating that he “loves to work” on the game if possible. However, there’s little official news about upcoming Valve games, so we’re constantly wondering what happened to Half-Life 3.

If you’re a big fan of Portal, you might want to try some other great adventure games, or maybe Portal and Half-Life can be called retro now, some good old games. Also check out the best VR games, including of course Half-Life Alyx.
