Martin started his gaming career right away at the Danish IO Interactive, where he worked for over 5 years.
Why Denmark and Hitman? What were the decisions, opportunities and moves?
Denmark and Hitman were a coincidence. At my previous job, my boss and I didn’t agree on when to go to work, so we broke up, but I think it’s good. So I submitted my resume online and one of the replies came from IOI. I took the test, had a technical interview via skype, and then I was invited to Copenhagen, where I was asked more about some technical knowledge, and I also interviewed people in various positions above me. They also took me around the building and we had lunch at their buffet. Finally, they told me to look around in Copenhagen and direct me to Christianity. Then a few days later I received an offer.
I really liked Copenhagen and looked good in my work, so I took it.
The move was pretty easy, I packed my things, sold the bed and just flew away.
The first month I had a paid hotel, then I moved into an apartment with two other new colleagues.
So in the end there were more offers, just IOI responded quickly and looked good?
More precisely, there were more, but IO did not want any project, only a test and an interview.
How is IOI coping with the epidemic?
As far as I know, several people can enter the offices, they must be separated and there is a limit on the number of people. Otherwise, most make a house so that they can take home everything they need for work, even furniture, as far as I know.
I understand correctly that you are the programmer of the folder with the online game? What exactly are you working on?
I’m part of an online team, we design and manage servers for authentication, player progression, challenges, inventory and the like. We are also responsible for console support such as achievements, rich presence and various other console specific things.
What was the biggest difference for you when developing the new Hitman 1 and Hitman 2?
Well, I arrived about a year before the first issue came out, so maybe I was still a little disoriented. Moreover, as far as I know, they did the first place for a long time, several years, because they also made a new engine. The second was then relatively fast. As for the online team, we have added support for new consoles and improved our backend, especially in terms of technology. Of course, we also worked on new features that we received from the designers. Personally, I don’t see much difference between development 1 and 2, but as I said, it will be mainly because I came about a year before the end of development number one, so I did not experience it to the fullest. .
Players have been against crunches for some time. I don’t know a studio where this could happen in the slightest. How was it for you?
I had one crunch at Hitman 2016, I was at work 5 weekends in a row. But then we were given extra leave, so that compensated a bit. But it occurred to me that since then he has improved, he is better planned, at least as far as our team is concerned.
What does your typical day look like? Both in terms of living in Denmark and in IOI.
No, a typical day in IO and Copenhagen. I usually got up around 9:30, got on my bike and was at work at 10.
Then we basically had stand-up, and then there was work.
Everyone dined at IO, they have their own canteen with cooks.
Then it worked again, here and there a meeting (people don’t tolerate much there) at 6, then again on a bike and home, or around the city for food, or a board game, or badminton. Just free time.
But I would stick out the bike mostly, in this Copenhagen it’s generally divine if you like to ride a bike.
It also occurred to me that we used to have a Friday bar at least once a month. But gradually it dawned on me that this began to happen almost every Friday.
Either we ran out of beer at work or we went to the pub. It was a really friendly team. Now in the crown we have beer here and there through Teams, but that’s not the case anymore, stupid time.
What kind of boards do you like? I would ask a designer how they inspire him to work. Are you a programmer?
I really like it, but you can’t play it all the time because there’s no time. Scythe, Root, Dice Forge, Ticket to Ride, Gloomhaven (I’ve been playing for over a year), Jungle Speed, Game of Thrones, Clang, Mage Knight. And many others.
Well, I’d like to think that logic/strategy keeps my brain sharp, but I don’t know if that’s the case.
What about your favorite video games? Do you also play a lot of multiplayer, or is it more of a coincidence that you ended up in your game’s online folder?
From multiplayer, I probably crush Dotu 2, in some places Quake Live, or Diabotical, sometimes Northgard. Otherwise I’ll take some adventure, RPG or bouncy castle here and there. I recently arrived in new Ori.
But online it will be just a coincidence. I actually studied computer graphics, but then worked in the cloud for AVG for a while, so maybe it’s interesting online.
Have you played the old Hitmans games? How would you rate them?
When it comes to playing Hitman, I’m a complete llama. I didn’t play the old parts at all, and as for the new ones, the tutorial went through in the first part.
Fortunately, this doesn’t bother me at all, because I don’t do game design. I’m focused on the purely technical side of things, so basically I don’t care what the game is about. It practically shouldn’t even be a game. But the games are just divine.
How are the Czech Games in Denmark?
As for the knowledge of Czech games, I don’t know at all, because none of them came up (as I remember). But I spoke to the graphic designer about the mole and praised him a lot.
Recently released Hitman 3. How did you come to this?
On the top three, I did integration with epic, export / import of data from Hitman 2, playstyle, then various optimizations of existing systems. I played a lot with the settings of our cloud and then of course fixed bugs and definitely a lot of other things that I don’t remember now.
But in almost everything, of course, there are more people working on these things, because the system has grown quite a lot for us.
