oculus quest 2 has dominated VR for the past two years, so it’s no surprise that individual competitors keep popping up. While Bytedance caused a stir with the Pico 4, HTC has mostly stuck to PC VR and professional headsets with the Vive line, with a few exceptions. However, thanks to a recent leak, we’ve reviewed HTC’s standalone plans.
Scoring a new contender for best VR headset against the Quest 2, YouTuber Brad Lynch showed off the HTC Vive Flowcus in a recent video. Vive Flow’s successor, Lynch avoids directly showing photos of the headphones that he says were delivered to him in black and white. Instead, he collaborated with product designer Markus Kane to create realistic 3D renderings based on those images.
Citing “numerous industry sources,” Lynch details the key features of this report. Flowcus would use 1920 x 1920 LCD panel resolution pancake lenses per eye, powered by the Qualcomm XR2 Gen 1 chip previously used in the Quest 2. Lynch claims the new HTC headsets also use four black-and-white cameras, a RGB pass-through and same tracking drivers as Vive Focus 3.
Stating that Flowcus will launch in early 2023, Lynch advises targeting these headsets at a “professional” audience like the Meta Quest Pro. After clarifying the details after posting the video, they said in Twitter which would potentially cost over $1,000. Naturally, the price remains speculative until HTC officially introduces this upcoming VR headset. If true, though, it’s comparable to the HTC Vive Pro, which costs almost $1,100 for complete hardware.
This isn’t the first time Lynch has been in the news lately. Back in September, a Quest 3 leak gave us our first look at the upcoming Meta headset via CAD renders. While the Oculus Quest 3 appears to lack the face and eye tracking features found in the Meta Quest Pro, Lynch claims it will use a more powerful Qualcomm XR2 Gen 2 chip. Of course, that could change, and Meta has likely tested various designs, so don’t take these specs for granted until they’re revealed.
