“Eagle’s Nest”. that means Alamut, the name of the Assassins fortress located in Iran. Known as the capital of the Brotherhood, this city was the headquarters of many other fortresses built in the mountains of Iran and Syria, such as Masyaf. Assassin’s Creed Mirage is getting closer and closer, and the new title of the historical Ubisoft series will inevitably lead us to talk about the Alamut castle.
Let’s go and see what we know about impregnable capital so far. Brotherhood of Assassins.
Alamut in history
In reality, Alamut Castle It was built in Iran (present-day Iran) in 840 and all that remains today are fascinating ruins. An imposing mountain fortress reaching an altitude of 2,100 meters in the arid hills south of the Caspian Sea.
Famous for its magnificent gardens, libraries and laboratories, where philosophers, scientists and theologians could discuss in complete freedom of opinion, this building was built on a road with a single entrance, thus making the conquest of the castle extremely difficult. And mainly for this reason Alamut earned the reputation of an impregnable fortress at that time.
Although on the balance, the outpost was the victim of numerous sieges: in 1090 the castle was invaded and occupied by Hašīšiyyūn, a derogatory term of the time, which became “assassins” in Italian and translated in similar forms in other European languages. It’s pretty clear here how the organization was a huge inspiration for Ubisoft in laying the foundations for the Assassin’s Creed video game.
The castle will remain the site of assassins until it was destroyed in 1250 due to the Mongol invasion.
In the world of Assassin’s Creed
As for the universe of the series UbisoftInstead, Alamut was built over a small temple of Isu containing dozens of memory seals, unaware of the Assassins of the time. The seals already covered in Assassin’s Creed Revelations as Ezio deepens his research into Altair’s life.
Under the leadership of Hassan-i Sabbah (historically existent figure, fortress commander from 1090 to 1124), Alamut becomes the home base of the Levantine Brothers when the order moves from a secret order to a public one. In 1227, many took refuge in Alamut: Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad, his son Darim, his late son Sef’s wife and grandchildren arrived at the fort after a coup attempt by Abbas Sofian. Regaining command of the order of the assassins.
Altair, the hero of the first part of the epic, remains in exile in the castle for almost twenty years, during which time he begins to make many discoveries and create a series of inventions with the knowledge he gained from the Apple of Eden. During this period he also discovers the remains of the first Civilization temple and carries six commemorative seals with him, then uses five of them as keys to open the library under Masyaf castle.
Alamut then serves as the organization’s capital and will play that role from 850 until the fall of the Mongol Empire in 1256: the Assassins lose control of the castle due to invasion, and its famous library is destroyed by a fire.
It is also possible that the siege and consequent fall of Alamut took place as an act of retaliation after Genghis Khan was already featured in Assassin’s Creed 2 by the legendary Mongolian assassin Qulan Gal and was killed at the hands of Darim Ibn-La. Ahad is Altair’s son.
The last assassin to visit its ruins in the 18th century will be the Englishman Edward Kenway while searching for sites related to the Isu.
Alamut in Assassin’s Creed Mirage
Next year, players will be able to explore the events that shaped Basim’s origins. In Assassin’s Creed Mirage we will visit four districts of Baghdad, but a key role in the settings will definitely be entrusted to the fortress of Alamut.
As we’ve seen, in Assassin’s Creed history, the castle of Alamut is just as important as Masyaf’s in the first episode, and its inclusion in Assassin’s Creed Mirage leads us to imagine that the franchise’s lore could be expanded significantly. Coming to the new episode.
While there have already been several references to Alamut throughout the saga (in Valhalla, Rogue, and some parallel stories from the series), Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be the first game in the series to feature the castle directly. Given that the castle must still be under construction at the time Mirage takes place, it will certainly play an important role in the story, although it may not seem like it could be freely explored until now.
Basim’s mentor Roshan, who will probably be here, will train our new hero in Assassin’s Creed. Moreover, after the events of Valhalla in 879, the Hidden ones will call Hytham to learn of Basim’s betrayal, right in the castle.
