GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs can also damage native 16-pin power cables.

Nvidia recently found itself in a quandary over the controversy surrounding its GeForce RTX 4090 power adapter, the design of which seems to be getting quite hot… to the point of melting both power consumption and the GPU. While this issue appears to be limited to the cables included with Team Green, unfortunately the issue may be more widespread.

As of October 24, the Nvidia subreddit has updated its 16-pin adapter megathread with new reports of RTX 4090 graphics cards and damaged power cables. As cases mount, Nvidia has taken it upon itself to personally test all partially melted GPUs and adapters, but now it may also be necessary to include native 16-pin headers in your investigation.

At the time of this writing, there have been two reported cases where GeForce RTX 4090 pixel pushers sustained similar damage when using the new 12VHPWR connector. This suggests that most of the failures may come from the best Nvidia graphics card, or there may be issues with the best power supplies on the market.

Either way, it’s not good for the RTX 4000 series, especially since AMD’s new Radeon RX 7000 GPUs eschew the socket altogether. We hope the RTX 4080 doesn’t suffer the same confusing fate.
