In space, no one can count your APM. At the very least, we hope that applies to the RTS space game Sins of a Solar Empire 2, which has now entered the first phase of its Early Access period. During this technical pre-development period, players will be able to try out single player content for one of the sci-fi strategy factions so they can provide valuable feedback to developers Stardock and Ironclad Games.

“This Early Access will be more like an old school beta program,” says Brian Clair, director of publishing at Stardock. “The goal is to use the feedback we get and refine the game with monthly public updates.”

The developers say that while this first phase is “just a technical preview”, Sins of a Solar Empire II already has a lot going for it. The map constantly changes based on planetary orbits, turrets have realistic firing ranges and projectile trajectories, and worlds can be customized with a powerful planetary colonization system. You will have to fight against various NPC factions that can help or hinder your path to galactic domination.

The Tech Preview phase will also be the first flight of Ironclad’s new Iron Engine, which the developer says is 64-bit, neutral, and will support “tens of thousands” of ships with no noticeable performance hit.

The initial Tech Preview phase will be followed by a multiplayer alpha that will add two more factions: Vasari and Advent, Stardock and Ironclad. Finally, the beta phase “will focus on polishing, balancing, fixing vulnerabilities, and improving visual fidelity.”
