The GeForce RTX 4090 is undeniably powerful, but numerous reports of a melting cable issue have somewhat tarnished the reputation of the RTX 4000 graphics card. Now, Nvidia has opened an official investigation into the issue and has been in touch. directly with affected customers.
The owner of Nvidia’s top graphics card has shared images of his RTX 4090 and power adapter on Reddit, whose plastic casing appears to have partially melted. User reggie_gakil says that he first noticed the damage because his GPU “smelled and saw smoke” and states that the adapter is probably the culprit because “the card still seems to work”.
However, this was not an isolated incident, as Reddit user NoDuelsPolicy also shared images of his RTX 4090 with similar damage. Following this, Nvidia issued a statement to The Verge:
“We are reviewing the reports,” said Nvidia spokesman Brian Del Rizzo, “We are in contact with the original owner and will be reaching out to the other for more information.”
The new 12VHPWR connector used on the RTX 4090 has already caused a lot of headaches for reviewers and users alike, as it has strict requirements on how it should be bent. Given the sheer size of the RTX 4000 graphics card, even the best PC case can struggle to meet these stringent requirements.
For now, it might be worth waiting for a CableMod GPU adapter to fix the Nvidia RTX 4090’s poor port placement, or holding off buying a pixel pusher until that issue is properly resolved. This same connector will be used on future AMD RDNA 3 graphics cards, so Team Green may not be the only one to fix this issue.
